Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Against the grain: Why achievements should be banned/removed (short post)

I think a unified system like xbox live, psn, or steam is a good thing.

However, the iOS has an almost unlimited number of achievement clones (game center, crystal, open feint, so on) I think that waters down the meaning of achievements on that system and there's no reason to earn them. The only possible exception is Tilt to Live and that's because the game is just that damn good.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

That's how I feel with Steam achievements especially on Valve games.

Seriously I stopped playing Team Fortress 2 because there is no way to earn all these achievements and when looking at your stats it always looks pathetic no matter how long you play it. If somebody cares the game has currently 368 achievements....

yea I bought King Kong and actually it wasn't half bad, just sometimes annoying with them always making me save everyone else. However I think achievements that are to hard ruin a game. For instance, GTA IV. Play the whole game and also do extra for 300 achievement points, what a joke. Some help to give replay value but some are just a joke how much you have to do. Some Tiger Woods is plagued with these achievement issues. I Think games like Oblivion got it right, knowing the game is very long you can get them all within the side quests and main quests in one play through

I think this can stop sales too, If achievements are just way to hard to get. I think that playing through the game should get you atleast half the achievements of the game. If you want to make them play it on hard fine but then it comes down to how good the gameplay is. If it is hard to control then this can ruin the game as well. So if your game is just ok, then make the achievements easier. The better the game the more you can raise the bar.

Like lost planet, I won't even play it because the achievements are just to hard for the game. Not really so much hard but they are a lot of online and if your online sucks then who wants to play to get them, no one. You are right though achievements are addictive and should be chosen wisely. If not, it can ruin the game or just make you feel ripped off.

OH YEA, secret achievements are just stupid. I go online and read them right away, so what the point? To get me online, that will happen anyway.

This. Oblivion has the best acheivements on any game for me, made me want to play and finish al side-quests.

But acheivements which you get for advancing with the story are stupid, especially if more than half of them are like this.

Similarly, online-only acheivements puts people who can't go online at a disadvanage

Also-Bioshock. That didn't have secret acheivements. I found out right at the start Atlas was the baddy, you became a Big Daddy and you killed Ryan with a golf club. That's unfair man...

Indeed. World Of Warcraft has a similar issue, so many acheivements came out that most people gave up on it ages ago...

Does anyone actually still play it?

For me, I've rented a couple games to just get the trophies for them and found that I actually really enjoyed the game to boot. Several times I've stopped and thought to myself, "I probably wouldn't have played this game normally".

Well then, surely they've done their jobs then no? The idea behind it to get that boost persuaded you to play these games, so the company makes more money.

That's a good thing

I'd say yes and no.

From a gamer's perspective, yes, that's a great thing.

But from a business perspective, well, that anecdote reinforces a rental environment, don't you think?

Gamer scores don't really do anything for me.  Now getting unlockable items, or leveling up to get more "loot" does have appeal (like I did with Game Room), but not the score.  I just play that.

This being said, what is gaming but a chance to get a greater score, complete some goals, or see the end to a story?  Exploring would be to find and unlock new stuff actually.

I don't think valve intends a reasonable amount of users to get all 300 achievements for tf2 anyway. It just offers challenges for those that want to complete them and for those situations where you can prove something happenend while you played.

I love them for the fact that they are great reminders of the game itself.  I can go back and look at achievements for any particular game and be reminded of many of the things I did.

To collect them as a "score" I suppose its one of the only things left in gaming today that represents a game "score"

Same here, great way to browse through all the games I've played.

Throphies / achievements for completing chapters is also useful to see how far your friends are in a certain game. Check their progress first before spoiling half the game for them by asking how they got by something later on.

The only game in which achievements actually made sense for progress was Test drive unlimited. The achievements gave you the xp you needed to level. I would be nice if more games actually integrated them in the game instead of just tacking them on to certain events.
