Forums - Gaming - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is great. Let's talk about it.

I think the game is great. I've cleared the story, think I'll aim towards getting a full gamerscore on it too, because it was really fun and well-made.

That said, like most people, I don't think it felt much like Castlevania. I feel a lot like disolitude seems to when it comes to that point. I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing for the series, really, but the fact remains that the game itself is really fun. There are a few flaws here and there, but it's definitely a worthwhile gem of a game. Love it.

Also, someone said Bloody Tears was in this game - where/when? I can't believe I somehow missed that.

I believe Vampire Killer plays in a music box.

Not going to outline further for spoiler's sake, but you get what I mean.

More game play is on the way with the DLC! Can't wait!

This is only really true if you haven't figured out how to fight effectively yet. Countering staggers every single enemy in the game long enough to get a good combo going, and the Direct Heavy Combo just stuns people over and over and over unless they're real heavies.

Every single enemy has an unblockable, uncounterable attack that you must dodge and use of it is almost as common as regular attacks, some enemies use it more than regulars.  Heavy attacks aren't much good since there is rarely only one enemy so others will just attack from the sides since the heavy combos are pretty narrow in direction, so you need end them early with a counter or dodge or get hit.

They only start using their unblockables a lot if you try to stick to a single combo for some reason.

Like I said otherwise: area stunner combos are pretty easy to use, and in a pinch exploding fairies or Holy Water will clear things up for you. They give you a ton because they want you to use it.

I'm not taking away from your abilities or anything, just trying to point out where the system becomes more enjoyable.

The Metal Gear Solid theme song also plays in the game.

Well I've played through the game almost twice, once on normal and my hardest difficulty playthrough is up to last bit of chapter 8 I think which when looking at chapter content is near end game.  I don't think any enemy I've stunned with items has remained stunned long enough to do the longer combos of the game, the exceptions being mountables in a stunned state but using such combos on them is just being fancy and some really weak enemies that die before you even finish the combo.

Square, square, dodge alone will get you through 90% of the game on hardest, I did the werewolf lord trial for not using light magic (regain health) on hardest difficulty.  Long combos really have little use, the short ones are far more practical especially on hardest.

Your DPS skyrockets as combos get longer, and the Heavy Direct Combo does even more. You have to use variety, and the full normal combo isn't something that you get to use all the time - most smaller enemies are going to require aerial combos to make it easier, especially since the Guillotine moves do so much damage.

Longer combos are primarily there for heavy enemies, it's true, but they do stay stunned much longer than other enemies.

Go into Extras and turn on the damage indicators, and you'll get an idea of how much more effective long combos are. After that it's just a matter of learning to incorporate them.

Shadow Magic, by the way, does more than just increase damage - it makes your hits stun enemies a lot more often.

I mean it's only a point on smaller enemies. Even somewhat heavier enemies are better served with heavy combos.

The Light magic counter helps stun enemies all around you, too, which will let you get off full combos.

There is nothing inherently bad about it, though

- The story is pretty weak both in telling and characters.

- The combo system I feel is wasted since while you're busy comboing an enemy it'll ignore the fact it is being hit after about 2-3 hits and just attack you, making any long combo pretty worthless.  Game ends up square, square, dodge, square, square, dodge, square, square, dodge, square, square, dodge etc etc.  Air combos the exception but many enemies cannot be lifted for an air combo.

- No real replay value, the trials aren't really replay worthy and the collectables are the hollow kind of reply value.

I enjoyed playing it but glad I didn't buy it.

Of course every enemy has an unblockable. This is to keep the game from being too easy. Heavy attacks stun enemies and make them slump over. These are usually seen at the end of combos or if you hold square or triangle  while standing or in the air you can produce a highly powerful offensive move which keeps the enemy away from you. You must also remember to cut the move off incase you're in front of a larger opponent who isnt stunned and can easily go after you. Keep in mind that your efforts are quickly wearing it down.

Dude I am going to die if the DLC is another 10 hours together. Castlevania: LOS has got to be the longest Action/Adventure title in a while. LOL

 Yeah it really is.

It's a action game. You expected a lot of replay value?
