I think Heavenly Sword really got other devs to sit up and take notice of using motion capture in cinematics but other than that step I'd say Epic are largely responsible for driving the graphics style this gen.  The unreal engine has behind so many of this gens huge games that it is impossible to ignore it's influence imo.  Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 were very pretty titles with huge amounts of polish but I don't think they've driven other developers on to attain the same standards and they've not contributed to others titles in the way Epic have done with the Unreal engine.

Games have been using Motion Capture in Cinematics years before Heavenly Sword and the PS3 were even thought of. Metal Gear Solid on the PSX is just on example.

They looked crap by comparison, Heavenly Sword was a huge step forward.

With graphics? Possibly. When it comes to gameplay, i'd say no.

Err I would say it was Gears of War 1. I don't really think the bar has been raised significantly since then.

Halo set the bar for multiplatform shooters and what is seen to be the "perfect control scheme" outside of a PC. last gen.

Gears and Uncharted both set a similar standard for third person shooters.

I was talking about graphics really, it seems most developers still shoot for cost effectiveness in their design and Gears of War is the most cost effective current generation game.

Gears of War? I wouldn't put it on TOP, definitely in the top 10, mainly because Epic owns the Unreal Engine 3. But I have no doubt in my mind a game like CALL OF DUTY, any of them is a complete BARGAIN and the most cost-effective you can get this generation. I mean, they spout a game every year, they are all bascially the same, they use the same engine, lots of the same assets, same secondary voice actors, they don't optimize their engine that much. Graphics and animations still looking as cardboard crap as ever....and then they sell millions upon millions, collector's edition, super special editions, overpriced DLC. I doubt a *new* COD game (after COD4) costs more than $15 million to make, and then they go and sell over 12 million copies DLC. That's cost-effective right there.

I would reply with more depth, but just to let you know, you're wrong with most of your assumptions.

Tease.

Are you talking about all platforms including the PC or just consoles?

Console when you usually say multiplatform.

I'd say yes, they are trying then.

I think Black Ops and Halo have more of an influence.

Black Ops just came out. It's core influences come from that of Halo. This is why Call of Duty has become more successful than Halo.
