Forums - Sony - Is my PS3 getting ready to die?

Just called Gamestop, wanted to see if I could get those bastards to take it and use the money towards a Slim, but my god, they only give $90, then they have the nerve to resell it for $300-350.

Cheap bastards.

yes it's dying. I had that happen to my cousin and he later had it die on him. Sorry for the news, your ps3 has 3-6 months to live. LOL

Thanks for the response but I really don't see why it is funny.

Cause I was comparing it to a patient/docter interaction. Didn't mean to laugh in your time of dispair.

Sorry for your bad news. thats the positive of owning two Hd consoles. I own two xbox's but my buddy has a xbox 360 and ps3. His Ps3 broke and he had his 360 to fall back on.

after he got the ps3 repaired for 190 he doesn't want to play it though, he's scared it will dye again. So we play a lot of xbox live. I told him he needs to play it either way but he is wierd. He says he just uses it for blueray.

I actually just sold my 360 a few months back, only keeping Tales of Vesperia.

I guess this is Karma, lol.

Time to catch up on some Wii gaming I guess.

Yea I just picked up donkey kong country for the wii, Did not let me down. SO far I love the game. Thats something I love about the nintendo, It is usually just good old fun. Maybe because my childhood years where with the original nintendo and the super nintendo.

I have a launch 60 gig backwards compatible PS3.  I recently cleaned out the dust and replaced the thermal grease on both of the CPU and GPU to keep it in good shape.

What seems to happen over time is that either the GPU or CPU start to lose contact with their heat sink and overheat.  You will start to notice that the air coming out the back of your PS3 is cool, which is also a clue that you have a problem.

If you don't want to do it yourself you can probably find a computer shop in your area that will take your PS3 apart and reapply the thermal grease.

I don't know how much this helps, but when I measure the temperature on my PS3's vents I get anywhere from 100 - 120F.  I measure the temperature with an IR temperature gun.

Thank god for my local Play N Trade shop no more than 1-2 miles away. They say I can bring it in tomorrow and they will find out exactly what the issue is for no charge and at most I will have to pay ~$120 for a repair which will let me keep my HDD data I am guessing.

Never knew they did repairs.

There you go, now maybe get back another 360 for future issues. Helps keep the worry factor down. You'll be like, No problem I got the other to fall back on and get it fixed right and with in your money time frame.

I sold my 360 because of money concerns, so I won't be getting another any time soon, unless I can grab one dirt cheap.

I just rebooted my PS3 and magically, once again, the issue is gone. I wonder how long until it pops up again.

The person from Play N Trade said it could indeed just be an issue with my HDMI cable. I really do hope so. This beast has been through everything from my daughter dropping it, Netflix playing her shows for hours and hours each day, tons of BD movies, Pandora music streaming, streaming of the entire 6 seasons of "The Office" through the web browser, gaming, etc... the thing logs in at least 6 hours a day at least.

Well, my freind, 3 steps for you:

step 1:check the temperature of your console.

step 2:check your video cable,hdmi,av,rgb.

step 3:experiment with different games CDs.

if nothing works,Remove this phrase in your signature: Currently playing: Nier (PS3) ..you ps3 die soon....

Most likely they will leave your data intact, but back up anyway.
