Forums - Sony - Is my PS3 getting ready to die?

I can't find pictures to show what is going on so I will try my best to explain.

I first noticed this when playing Resident Evil 5 but thought nothing of it because it was only in one stage. While viewing things in a specific direction I would have this solid line going all the way across my screen, blocking my view. No matter what I did it would always be there. It went through everything whether it be walls, zombies, etc...

Then I was playing Nier and I would see a similar line, only not as huge protruding from Kaine's head. Later on I saw the same thing coming out of my main characters head.

Right now I am playing Castlevania : Lords of Shadow and during the first big boss battle at the Oblivion Lake Gabriel had this same line protruding from his head.

It gets rather annoying and only goes away if I turn off the PS3 and turn it back on, but it eventually works its way back.

If this a sign of worse things to come? Should I wait and get it repaired or should I sell my 60GB PS3 while it still has value and grab a slim?

I don't want to lose my saved data though.

It is similar to this but only one line at the moment. Only the line coming from the character's face.

yes it's dying. I had that happen to my cousin and he later had it die on him. Sorry for the news, your ps3 has 3-6 months to live. LOL

Thanks for the response but I really don't see why it is funny.

Yep its a GPU fault. If its still in warranty and the fault is reproduceable get a replacement.

If its out of warranty then welcome to the wonderful world of Sony aftersales.

Make sure it's just not the video, you swap cables and it's still there....you have an extended warranty?

First and most important thing to do: buy an external hard drive and back up. This will back up everything: game saves (protected or otherwise), install data (delete these to reduce backup size and time), photos, music, movies, account profiles, everything.

You probably don't have warranty on that thing, so you could send it to Sony for "repairs", in which case you can keep your lovely backwards compatibility, or you could get it repaired by a third party and sell it, buying a Slim partially with the money earned, effectively eliminating all hardware issues. It depends on whether you value build quality, or backwards compatibility.

You can backup protected save files? That would be wonderful. There is no way of just popping all those saved game files on a SD card? The save files are all I am really concerned about. I can always get my PSN account back.

I also enjoyed having PS2 B/C but I never actually use it so I doubt I would miss it, even though I still have a ton of PS2 games. It is also out of warranty since I purchased it in Dec. of 2006.

Is the slim really that much more reliable than me just getting this bad boy repaired? I would much rather prefer spending $150 than $300.

Also, if I send it in to SONY will I lose everything on my HDD?

Cause I was comparing it to a patient/docter interaction. Didn't mean to laugh in your time of dispair.

Sorry for your bad news. thats the positive of owning two Hd consoles. I own two xbox's but my buddy has a xbox 360 and ps3. His Ps3 broke and he had his 360 to fall back on.

after he got the ps3 repaired for 190 he doesn't want to play it though, he's scared it will dye again. So we play a lot of xbox live. I told him he needs to play it either way but he is wierd. He says he just uses it for blueray.

I actually just sold my 360 a few months back, only keeping Tales of Vesperia.

I guess this is Karma, lol.

Time to catch up on some Wii gaming I guess.
