Forums - Microsoft - Fox misleadingly suggests that Kinect sex game can be used by kids on 360.

In the annals of journalism, there have been many stunningly bad portrayals of video games by the media.  The latest is from an El Paso, Texas Fox affiliate that suggests that a pornographic video game that uses a hacked version of Kinect on the PC could somehow be downloaded by children on the Xbox 360.

The "story" is seemingly about Valverde family's purchase of a Kinect and Xbox 360 for their five-year old boy for Christmas.  Along the way, the story filed by Fox Morning News Reporter Martina Valverde gets more wrong than it does right.

For starters, the reporter calls the Xbox 360 an "xBox360".  Yes typos are common but this appears to be less about a typo and more about general ignorance on the subject matter as evidenced by the fact that Valverde doesn't once write the name of the Xbox 360 correctly in her piece.

The article briefly discusses the plans of a company called ThriXXX who is making an adult game to be used with Kinect.  Microsoft has since stated that they won't allow the game on Xbox LIVE but that didn't keep the Valverde's from suggesting it could still be downloaded and the Morning News Reporter did nothing to let readers know otherwise.  Let's take a look at a few of the choice quotes from the article.

"It’s inappropriate, especially when these games are geared towards younger children," said Valverde. "You see the commercials on the Disney channel on Nickelodeon of course they're going to want them."

As a consistent viewer of both Disney and Nickelodeon we can confirm that both channels do show commercials for video games.  However, none of them ever go beyond the Teen rating much less into the XXX rating.

"Anybody can get on-line with the XBOX360," said Angelica."It's a possibility he could be able to buy it without me actually knowing.”

Only if you signed your 5-year old up to an Xbox LIVE account with full priviliges and access to your credit card to buy Microsoft Points which are needed to buy games.  Of course, this ignores the fact that Microsoft will not be allowing the game on to Xbox LIVE.  So we are not sure how the young tike could buy it for the Xbox 360.

"You must be 18 years old to purchase, but that doesn't prevent someone from doing it," said Martin.

Actually, there are several steps that go into purchasing items on Xbox LIVE and there are many parental controls to prevent youngsters from viewing much less purchasing content they shouldn't be.  But again, that ignores the fact that the game won't be allowed on Xbox LIVE.

Since this is a local Fox affiliate in El Paso, it possibly isn't fair to tag the whole Fox News organization but this isn't the first run in that local or national affiliates have had with poor reporting on video games.  In this case, it appears to be a "morning reporter" using her own family's ignorance to create a sensational story that is not there.

This thread misleadingly suggests that this is Fox News when it's actually the local Fox affiliate in El Paso.

That's some excellent anaylsis you have there.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

Leave FOX News Alone!!! *screams like a little girl*

The number of people who are going to buy an Xbox 360 due to this news is probably higher than the number of people who are not going to buy one now.

As usual Badgenome wins.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

This proves my opinions on fox news yet again.

No it doesn't since it's a Fox News affiliate, no relation to the Fox News Channel.  Read the end of the article.
