Forums - General - How Can Someone Like Dostoyevsky, But Not Like "Twilight"?

For those of you who are interested, here's a very entertaining way of finding out what Twilight is all about:

"I don't understand how someone could like Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, but not like Twilight!!!"

"Last book I read was Brokeback Mountain, I just don't have the patience for them unless it's softcore porn."

(The Voice of a Generation and Seece)

"If you cant stand the sound of your own voice than dont become a singer !!!!!"

Haha, Excellent topic, and so true

I am a girl who reads and I also despise twilight, stephanie meyer has a horrible writing style, the stories are tedious teen dramas and bella swan is the worst character in any medium, ever. I won't even go into that one...

Playing devils advocate though 'liking' Dostoyevsky is almost as equal of a stretch as liking twilight. While Dostoyevsky is a masterful writer and some of his works are bona fide classics. His works are extremely tedious also, of course this is somewhat counterbalanced by the real value in the morals and insight they provide to the reader (much unlike twilight) but rarely have I ever heard someone say they 'like' Dostoyevsky. While the value of such works are not reallly in dispute by anyone, whether or not they hold your interest enough to enjoy them certainly is by many.

However I did some art history and philospohy of art papers in my degree and we had a few fine artists who said they liked him, but they were so pretentious I strongly believe they were just doing it to annoy people. Even the lecturers admitted that they worried about the perception of 'fun' of someone who would avidly enjoy such works.

But then my absolute favourite classic work is Paradise Lost which is widely considered to be one of the most boring works in the written canon so I'm probably being hypocritcal by even saying this, take my opinion with a grain of salt on this one.

Its funny you mentioned that; For the past year, I have reald a lot of Dostoyevsky's books and I have to say I did have trouble at first.

He has a slow, detailed style. Most of his main characters are verborragic and prone to overthinking everything (probably a reflection of the author)

Also, since he wrote it in the 19th century, there is the matter of a differet style that people possessed (specially in Russia).

But after I got over that, I am having fun.

Even with his masterpieces (Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment) there were moments that dragged on a bit. However, there are absolutely masterful, amazing moments that more than makes it worth it for me.

Now, Im gonna stop otherwise Im gonna derail this thread (more )

How can someone like Twilight, but still have the brain power necessary to blink, breathe and speak at the same time? That's what confuses me.

I'm happy that you don't like Twilight! You're so far ONLY the 2nd girl I know who hates it (which is sad if you think about it).

I personally am not a huge fan of Dostoyevsky, mainly 'cause I disagree with the views he had in real life, and also the views he presents in his novels.

I am torn between what's a bigger insult to literature, Harry Potter series or the Twilight series, both are mediocre foundation English yet sell like hotcakes. Just goes to show the product does not necessarily has to be good to sell well.. I have hopes for my "stick on a string" idea.

The Harry Potter books are children's books, so they're pretty good for what they are. And I actually remember reading that the last 2 books in the series recieved quite a bit of critical acclaim.

Hmm true, if it were on the same lines as Twilight I am sure Harry would have already ripped Hermiones clothes and had a sexual intercourse instead of running around like a little pervert complaining about his life. It's the cohorts of adults who proclaim that it's the next best thing since sliced bread that are misleading as to what the target audience of those books is.

Inorite, it's a made up story in a mythical world, and the most famous guy in the world doesn't get laid until like 20. I wonder if Hogwarts had an equivalent of red light district.. and instead of hunting for Hoxruces or w/e they're called, Dumbledore takes him there, would be an entertaining twist tbh x)

Dumbledore is gay. I doubt he'd take Harry there. That's something a macho hetero guy wwould do. I think Sirius would've done something like that.
