Forums - General - How Can Someone Like Dostoyevsky, But Not Like "Twilight"?

HappySqurriel said:

This seems like a very unusual opinion because most of the women I know who are actually avid readers and interested in reading literature have absolutely hated the Twilight series. Their core complaint seems to be that it is a harlequin romance novel that targets the immature romantic fantasies of teenage girls (and teenage girls at heart) that is wrapped in a facade of the vampire genre; while the author complete ignores all vampire lore, and hundreds of years of literary tradition about vampires.

Very true.

My male cousin's girlfriend is the literature buff. My female cousin likes pop literature, and she was the one who made the comment in my first post.

"I don't understand how someone could like Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, but not like Twilight!!!"

"Last book I read was Brokeback Mountain, I just don't have the patience for them unless it's softcore porn."

I know quite a few girls that are avid readers but for some reason can't get enough of the freaking twilight series.  Boggles my mind.

In their defense though, they recognize that the books have no real literary merit, it's just a fantasy series that they can loose themselves in.  How they can do that, I don't know.  I read the books and absolutely hated them.  The characters are not organic in the least!

I hope this series is one of those things that are really popular but in the next 5 years people are ashmed as being fans of it.

I hope twilight ends up like vanilla ice.It dies and we all act like it never happen.

Yep, every woman I know who reads a lot absolutely hates Twilight, including my girlfriend, who reads all sorts of crap sci-fi and fantasy stuff. From what I've seen (read excerpts) and heard from people whose opinions on stuff doesn't suck, the books are all-around BAD. They're poorly written, the characters are ridiculous, and the storylines don't make much sense within the context of the world and characters.
