Can The Last Story usurp Final Fantasy as the best selling console JRPG?

Yes 65 27.31%

No 173 72.69%

Why was this thread created? Like seriously, Sakaguchi has no plans on competing with a series he HIMSELF created. He is just making a game in which he thinks the final fantasy series should have continued.

How much did Final Fantasy 1 make with Nintendo's marketing? That game received a push from Nintendo and was a critical success. Same thing will happen with The Last Story.

Some Sony fans here are forgetting if Nintendo never gave a damn about Final Fantasy 1 and gave it a push, that IP would never exist ;]

The Last Story is being bundled with a Wii and is receiving a major push From Nintendo in Japan unlike with Xenoblade. Sales will surprise a couple of doubters in this thread.

I really think tLS will be a great game, one of the better JRPG's this gen, but even if you put it on all consoles 1m LT would be an achievement.

Expecting that much for a new IP is...madness.

Isn't Pokémon the best-selling JRPG? I'm quite sure it is. The games are RPG's, and they're from Japan.

The OP didn't word it well, but I think he means home console RPG. To which I reply that it won't be possible for it to outsell DQ or FF, I'd say it won't outsell the best selling Tales of game.

Wii is the wrong console for a game of this kind to become a massive hit
, and it's actually arriving too late to make an impact.

Well, DQX might have something to say about that.

DQX has an established fanbase, and a very loyal one. This is a new IP, totally different.
Plus it will be hard for DQX to beat the best selling home console DQ.

Well, you said 'for a game of this kind', and the games seem to be of a kind.

One is 20 plus years old the other is new, two different kinds of games.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Are we even getting this game in the US, cause im still waiting for official word and what the hell happened to Xenoblade I thought that game was supposed to be good, why has it sold so little. JRPGs this gen have been underwhelming on consoles sales and quality

Well, I'm not going to lie, I'd love to see this happen. Unfortunately, I don't think it will. It took 3 games in the Dragon Quest series and 5 in the Final Fantasy series before sales started to explode in Japan. With marketing and controlled quality, it may stand a chance to do so after a few sequels. (And given Sakaguchi, it could happen.) But the first one won't set the world ablaze.

However, there is this slim, but non-zero chance, that if everything falls right, it MIGHT be able to outsell FF13 in Japan only. Looking at Japanese sales, FF13 is the worst-selling mainline FF since FF4. (It needs 550K more just to reach 10-2, at which point it will be right behind 12.) If it can manage this, I do think it can cause quite a stir in Japan. I think this is the best shot it has at doing something major with the first game. And I do hope it does well and sticks around; I want to see something not from S-E challenge the FF empire.

Tell me this isn't a serious question please :(

I think Final Fantasy has declined a lot in sales. The Last Story is sounding like a game that doesn't come very often and Nintendo is showing they want to market it. They did this to Dragon Quest IX and I think Dragon Quest IX outsold Final Fantasy XIII so it could happen with The Last Story, no?

DQIX outsold FFXIII in Japan yes, but DQVIII got 4.5m and DQIX increased that to 5.3m it isn't a massive step up in percentages.  There's a huge difference between pushing a huge franchise to be even bigger and pushing a new IP to match one of the highest selling JRPG series ever.

I see but is it impossible? If Nintendo gives The Last Story Final Fantasy level marketing it can be possible. The online could mean Japan might get its first multiplayer JRPG. I think there's potential, maybe The Last Story 2 or 3 will see it Usurp Final Fantasy.

White Knight Chronicles had a multiplayer mode...

And then White Knight Chronicles 2.

They were awful games that Japanese gamers didn't appreciate either. The Last Story won't be.

So can you tell the future, or have you played The Last Story?   If so, can you give some impressions on what makes this new ip so special?

The Last Story Wii........instant 10 million plus hit! Nintendo does that then it's guaranteed to match Final Fintasy.

Totally agree with you, I just want to knock down the first 100k, before I even consider what it would rival.

Very unlikely imo.

FF XIII has sold enough (especially on 2 consoles right) and Last Story will have a difficult time selling that many copies only on the Wii right.
