Top 50's out, Graces f & GT5 are dropping fast, Tactics Ogre's already gone.  Umineko bombed too (Alchemist was expecting 100k iirc, it'll be lucky to hit a quarter of that at this rate), and actually a lot of PS3/PSP software seems to be underperforming this holiday generally (Danganropa being a good example).   The only real holiday success story on the PlayStations seems to be MHP3 (though what a success story it is!)... I wonder if it could be "sucking the oxygen out of the room" so to speak?

FFXIIIi 360 (expectedly) bombed too.  Awful, awful planning on SE's part, the game really needed extra content, a multiplatform release, and for there not to be new copies of FFXIII PS3 on shelves for a quarter the price.

Nintendo meanwhile, is doing pretty fantastic, and even some 3rd party stuff (Magician's Quest 2, Taiko Wii/DS 3, One Piece GB) is getting decent lifts alongside them.  I wonder if 3rd parties are regretting not putting better stuff on Wii/DS around this time?

Thanks Bruno! <3

Castlevania did pretty bad considering it got a system bundle (and yes, MC tracks hardware bundles with the software).  The bundle itself must've sold next to nothing though, since MGS4 is totally absent from the top 50.   Shining Hearts did well for the series but has extremely horrible legs considering it did ~80k first day.

IE3 Ogre had a meh debut, but honestly I'm surprised any retailers ordered it at all considering how overshipped IE3 was.  Ninokuni has an okay hold, but they better hope wom improves if they want to move that 600k.  Honestly, I totally drank Hino's coolaid about the game and expected it to be the new DQ/FF/MH, but looking back the conceptual disconnect in forcing a handheld game to use a giant tome is so obvious.  I think they should've incorporated the Magic Master in-game on DS, and maybe saved the book for just the PS3 version.

One weird thing is the Mario-All Stars drop... I wonder if Nintendo's closed shipments already or something?  I know it's already next to impossible to find in the US.

I also expected PS3 hardware to do better given this week they released several bundles this week (Kojima bundle, Move Saru bundle, Move Sports bundle).  Wii takes the lead from PS3 this week YTD by Mediacreate, though it already had it 3 weeks ago according to Dengeki.

Pretty stable for the last 20 years. Why? Well look at the Japanese population in 1985 = 121m, vs. 1990 = 124m, 1995 = 126m, 2000 = 127m. 2005 = 128m, 2010 = 127m. The death rate is greater than the birth rate in Japan now - the country is shrinking. In theory though that means the country is getting younger too, which helps explain the portables, as for every one person born something like 1.2 people die (most of them older).

I'd say its the oposite, the population might be aging. We'll have to check the life expectancy, but it may be getting higher as medicine and technology allow to live longer. And if the birth rate is getting lower, the percentage of old people should increase. Probably that explains the strategy of the DS XL, dunno.

The general trend isn't good though in Japan for consoles:

Famicom - 19m (more if you include NEC's system)

Super Famicom & Genesis - 20m

PS1 & N64 & Saturn - 30m

PS2 & GC & DC & Xbox - 30m

Wii & PS3 & X360 - 18.5m to date - probably not going to reach 30m

Pretty stable for the last 20 years. Why? Well look at the Japanese population in 1985 = 121m, vs. 1990 = 124m, 1995 = 126m, 2000 = 127m. 2005 = 128m, 2010 = 127m. The death rate is greater than the birth rate in Japan now - the country is shrinking. In theory though that means the country is getting younger too, which helps explain the portables, as for every one person born something like 1.2 people die (most of them older).

Now look at the USA:

NES - 34m (37m w/ master system)

SNES & Genesis - 40m (more with Turbografx and others)

PS1 &  N64 &  Saturn - 56m?

PS2 & Xbox & GC & DC - 73m roughly by the time PS2 stops selling

Wii & X360 & PS3 - Roughly 70m through 2010 and huge volumes will be sold in 2011 and 2012 at least.

USA Pop in 2010 = 308m

USA Pop in 2005 - about 295m

USA Pop in 2000 = 281m

USA Pop in 1995 = 263m

USA Pop in 1990 = 249m

USA Pop in 1985 = 238m

The USA has 70m more people now than at the start of the NES generation, Japan only 7m more. Not surprisingly, USA console growth per generation is going to increase by about 70m from the NES era to the Wii era. Wii & X360 & PS3 could easily do 50-60m, 35-45m, 20-30m in the USA each.

Japans population is getting older. Fewer young people are being born now than in the past so there are more old people - the shrinking population isn't caused by an increase in the death rate but by a drop in the birth rate.

I'm not sure why people are saying GT5 is "not on the shelves". The game has been very easy to find ever since it released. It's on every shelf at every game/toy/electronics store that I've been to.

starcraft: "I and every PS3 fanboy alive are waiting for Versus more than FFXIII.
Me since the games were revealed, the fanboys since E3."

24. / 26. [NDS] New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo) {25/05/06}

26. / 16. [PS3] Gran Turismo 5 (SCE) {25/11/10}

Yup i wondered about that. Maybe also demand has been really strong. I hope they ship > 1 million

cause people don't want to accept the GT5 sale number as it is. The same people also didn't take into the consideration that used copies of GT5 are everywhere. Thanks for confirming it though.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
