The marketing for this device alone(which was actually engineered by the same firm that marketed the Wii originally) was enough to give it huge success, the timing at christmas, with NO competition, was the largest heavyweight behind it. MS are being destroyed by Google and Apple in every other sphere of computer technology, and the Kinects success won't change this fact at the end of the day (this fin. article is saying the same thing). I am genuinly happy for expanded gaming markets, and i am incredibly surprised that this "over saturated" market segment has been so willing to adopt this new tech, and so soon after the Wii, but I am not happy with the products accuracy, and most VGChartz users would agree with me. |
So Apple destroys MS in the OS segment? What about office? What about servers? What about browsers?
Google: Android and search
Apple: iPhone / iPad / iPod
MS: OS / Office / servers / Internet Explorer / Xbox (Live)
Let's see how WinMo 7 performs in the long run and how the new tablet PCs with MS software will perform in 2011.
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
Microsoft are destroying themselves in those other markets you point out :P

The ones that have actually played it, disagree. I havn't heard any of the people that have played it complain about lag, it just doesn't affect the gameplay.
Well, since day one I've said both Move and Kinect would not be that huge. I said both might barely make the 5 to 10m (10% to 15% of their repsective userbase) mark. However, I did say that Kinect might prove me wrong due to Dance Central.... and it appears that is exactly what is happening.
Dance Central is a really fun game and like Wii Sports propelled $250 Wii's for years at astronomical levels, Dance Central is doing the same for $200 Kinect DC. Hell, this time next year when they can both be had for $200 (assuming X360 and Kinect price drops), 360 will be selling quite well going into the next gen launch year of 2012.
Granted, DC could still wane off due to over saturation of dancing games (thanks to those on Wii) like music games (Guitar Hero and Rock Band are dead) and unless there is some other major pull, like how Wii had Wii Fit, it could taper off quickly.
However, unique Move users will still never be that great of percentage of PS3's userbase.

WOW that is a nice way to spin the fact you were wrong.
Basically you said they will fail, but if not, it is because of Dance Central.
What a bold prediction. You are wrong btw, because Dance Central is not the best selling Kinect game. Kinect Sports is. IMO it is the mix between Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports and Dance Central that sells Kinect.

Kinect Sports? wtf are you talking about? The people I know who own it and all wanted it over the holidays was solely due to the Dance Central commercials being everywhere. Considering DC was given away free this holiday by Old Navy with any $25 purchase and it was the only stand-alone Kinect game I saw get any commercialization, I say VGC is heavily under-tracking this one. VGC is awesome, but in games they have been way wrong before and I'm sure this time as well. Also, Kinect Adventures is the best selling technically so you're wrong. :P

Good to hear because then Dance Central is going to sell awesome post Christmas since according to NPD in November (Old Navy give away covered by this period) Dance Central wasnt the prime reason for Kinect sales. This must mean that Kinect was simply a gift and the software sales will come post holiday.
Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.
As pointed out, I think it's misleading to say its the fastest selling device by excluding Apple's astronomical iPhone sales from the category of devices.
However, I was definitely wrong about Kinect. Unlike others, I'll admit I secretly wanted this device to fail which probably prevented me from seeing the bigger picture.
