I don't understand, so the solder is the problem, because the heat causes it to melt, nothing wrong with the cell and RSX?? what if I wipe them clean and re do the soldering with new solder??

anyone??

Well I'd like to help you but I don't even know what's a solder LOL

The solder is the tin (metal) that connects the pins of the cpu to the motherboard.

In 2005 the industry switched to lead-free solder, less hazardous, better for the environment right?

Except it cracks after sustained use causing the RROD and YLOD. Not so good for the environment after all, with all the extra shipping for repairs and eventually piles of dead machines.

so will re soldering help or make it worse?? I have some relatively high lead concentration solders as well.

If I told you guys how much money i've made from fixing PS3's with YLOD.  Lol it's pretty insane.  I've already mastered how to put it apart and back together really quick.  Piece of cake :)   $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I used gilksy's videos a few months ago when my PS3 YLODed on me (thread here)

I think you should do as others say and trade it in while you still can.  I kept mine long enough to reformat the HDD and then traded that sucker in.  I'm sittin next to a brand new 160 gig slim PS3

Yes if you have the tools. Looking at the bottom of the board I wouldn't be able to do it by hand. Lots of tiny pins. Makes a nice decoration though.

I guess heating it up to 350 makes it all melt and settle back into place, I guess that's what reflow means?

Bathing it in a bath of 350 degree solder as they do in the manufacturing process might do the trick. Although the 2 different solders might not mix or you most likely end up with massive shorts all over the board :/

Here is the link to my thread from almost 7 months ago.

Oh and my PS3 is still working.  My biggest advice is to find a way to keep the system cooler than normal (along with replacing the thermal paste of course).  My fan method worked (from my 2nd reply) but it may not be worth the noise to most people.

Here's a post from another thread that describes what I did in a bit more detail, with the youtube video as well.

I reflowed my old 60gb so much I could take it apart and put it back together in less than 5 minutes each. But, after a while the reflow only lasted 5 hours and I just ended up selling it to a pawn shop when the slim came out.

**Sigh** I miss that fat bastard.

@underlined: exactly what I was thinking.

@bold: I know, thats the biggest problem here. I have the tools, and if it requires more advanced stuff I can probably find them in our lab. I just need to figure out a way to clean the old solders safely and pimp it up with my own Pb juice.

Theres a place near me that will do all that for 60 bucks

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

lmaoo. this post is icing on the cake of your awesome story boutros. congrats on the fix!! you give me the strength to attempt fixing mine when the time comes (note how i say when, and not if lol)

but seriously though, you should back up all your files and make some money back on being able to trade it in. You're being irresponsible if you're gonna keep letting it die and keep fixing it. its like you're torturing a fly by slowly pulling off its limbs and wings. but letting it live till eventually you got nuttin left to pluck off except the head. i pity your ps3 from here on out lol.

But it's much more responsible to sell a product to someone that you know will break?  Something they can't even get repaired by Sony officially any more?  Sounds to me like you've confused "responsible" with "douche bag."  I for one applaud him for not ripping someone else off, even if that's not his motivation.
