Forums - Gaming - MS 'taking the fight to Apple' with Windows Phone 7

Microsoft Games Studios' Kieron Connell has said that the platform holder's deadly serious about its assault on the mobile market with Windows Phone 7.

Speaking at the Evolve In London Conference, he said that Apple's competitors have invested too much in the mobile sector to just give up and let the iPhone maker dominate.

"I think there are too many people with too much money invested to let Apple win in terms of flooding the entire market," Connell told the audience, according to GI.biz.

"You'd better believe Microsoft is very serious about Windows Phone 7, and protecting their part of the business. It's going to be an interesting time - that's for sure."

Being too serious is the biggest problem of MS, don't you think?

Actually, the stance of "we've invested too much" thinking is one of very well known pitfalls in the business. So I suprised, didn't they learn their MBA courses well? xD

Microsoft should probably be thinking more about competing with Android. Carriers and handset manufacturers are the market that they're actually selling to.

Slim chances that Microsoft will have an effect on iPhone's sales.

Shouldn't be a surprise.  Anyone that's followed WP7's development knows that they're for real about it.

I personally don't own a smartphone.  While neat, neither WM, iOS or Android have impressed me enough to take that financial leap.  WP7 has really intrigued me, though.  Whenever they get the CDMA devices out, and if it makes financial sense for me, I'm going to seriously consider getting one.  And the more they tie in their other services and make good use of the cloud, I think its appeal will grow more and more.

There is room in the still relatively small (less than 30%) smartphone market for iOS, Android and WP7.  In fact, for those not paying attention, in just ONE YEAR'S TIME there are now more Android phones being sold than iPhones.  Where will WP7 be in one year ...?

I hope Microsoft will keep on trucking high and mighty, I'm really impressed with what they've done with WP7. I'm counting on making it my first smartphone ever!

If they make it really user friendly then I'll think about it, as long as they don't stray away from the point of it being a phone first.

User friendliness is exactly what they've aimed with WP7, and it's what I like so much about it. It's all about making your interactions with the phone easy and natural.

off topic but,

tbh, I think my next phone will be Android if anything, unless something else better comes along. iPhone works wonders after you jailbreak it, but Apple is still being dicks about flash which is the ONLY problem it has after you hack it. WP7 is another example of closed platform that's going to fuck me over one way or another. Though I'm sure most users won't even notice the difference since the percentage of power users vs regular consumers is very big.

MS hasn't announced any sales numbers yet.. which is strange cause it has been 50 days it was released in EU and 30 days in the US and now the rumors are that it vastly underperformed.. making developers like the company I work for hesitant to step in.
