Not a bad point!

Now look at all the games that sold over 15 million.

Well most of them have some sort of social component to them.

Also, keep in mind EA needs to make an effective use of their resources. They don't want to downsize and pay for Mario/Wii liscences. If you're Nintendo you can leverage the strength of your gaming icons.

EA on the other hand has to focus their efforts on increasing the sales of the average game they release. By average I don't mean quality, but if they release 10 games, the number they sell in total has to be higher per game they release.

That's very true, but there's no clear indicator that being connected correlates to higher sales.

My impression is that farmville  and games like it make the most money.
I have a feeling that's the major inspiration behind being more connected.

"Most" is the operative word here.

Actually, without being an expert on these games, but I some quick checks, and I counted a total of 27 "connected" games on that list. A majority in other words.

Not a bad point!

Now look at all the games that sold over 15 million.

I can't be bothered to count, since we both know what the outcome will be. But I'll counter your argument by saying that neither the Wii or DS are particularly strong with regards to online connectivity, not compared to the PS360 anyway.

But Nintendo are putting great focus on being connected with the 3DS, and I doubt they'll let their next home console be as behind in the online arena as the Wii is.

So I still think non-connected games are going away. Maybe not completely, but they'll definitely become fewer and fewer sooner rather than later.

But look at God of War III!

And next year I don't think The Last Guardian will have any sort of 'online connectivity' but I'm inclined to believe that it could sell over 1 Mil unlike Team Ico's past games.

If you make it compelling and fantastic, there is no reason why people won't buy it. Look at Assassin's Creed and II.

Sure games like Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Dead Space 2 and rumored inFamous 2 and Batman Arkham City, which were previously SP only games that now are getting MP or Co Op Treatments but as long as the Game is great stuff and compelling enough, a SP game alone will still sell.

Though I must admit, Alan Wake, Castlavania Lord of Shadows, Vanquish and Enslaved aren't helping my point here...

I hate DLC. It is so pointless I expect a full release game. I would rather they release a bigger expansion every so often on disc.

But that is my personal taste as who knows one day 20years from now I want to relive a great game  I don't want to be hunting for the extras that made the game better.

They do when you treat them like bad/average games the only exception being Vanquish, even then, I dunno it just didn't create a splash like Bayonetta for a reason I think.

Agreed and I should've been more specific with relations to my last sentence. It's about them not selling well enough.

They're all 80 Meta games and yet they bombed commercially and the only thing common about them is that they're all SP only games. But then you look at last year with inFamous, Batman Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed II selling well despite being SP only games and even just this year God of War III has excellent sales and Heavy Rain blowing everyone's expectations sales wise, performing so well and both are purely SP only games.

So in summary, my point was that a SP only game that is well made and compelling will be able to sell but the sales of Alan Wake, Castlevania, Enslaved and Vanquish don't support that despite being solid games. That's what I was implying with my last sentence.

I don't know about Castlevania and Enslaved but Alan Wake and Vanquish are both connected, as it were.

I'm sure Castlevania isn't connected but I think Enslaved is as well with DLC?

Heavy Rain, Assassin's Creed II and Batman: Arkham Asylum are all connected though, and even inFamous was a tiny bit connected.
