Well most of them have some sort of social component to them.
Also, keep in mind EA needs to make an effective use of their resources. They don't want to downsize and pay for Mario/Wii liscences.If you're Nintendo you can leverage the strength of your gaming icons.
EA on the other hand has to focus their efforts on increasing the sales of the average game they release. By average I don't mean quality, but if they release 10 games, the number they sell in total has to be higher per game they release.

That's very true, but there's no clear indicator that being connected correlates to higher sales.

My impression is that farmville and games like it make the most money.
I have a feeling that's the major inspiration behind being more connected.
