I disagree with you on the visuals score. GT games have always been visually consistant and beautiful. in 5, some rally levels are stunning (like the one where you are driving into the fireworks display) whilst other parts, (like the car I got for my birthday [the RS200]) are just woeful.

visually consistent? what about the 200 cars that look good compared to the 800 that look like gt4 models?

@everyone

thanks for the comments :) i do hope that my review is fair and just to your minds. i put a lot of effort into it :)

That's why I'm saying the score you gave it "for a GT game" was too high.

whoops i think i misunderstood you :P i thought you were asking me to rate it higher.

high? well.. i would've given it lower, but i have to give props to the weather and the other great looking features. i thought 7.0 was fairly low, i mean, GT games consistently get 10s in graphics. 7 is already a huge step back.

btw..

i meant that this is the worst GT ever made comparing it to just the mainline numbered games.

GT1 was the best racer and had the best graphics of its time.

GT2   "       "      "        "        "      "     "      "           "         "   "     "

GT3   "       "      "        "        "      "     "      "           "         "   "     "

GT4   "       "      "        "        "      "     "      "           "         "   "     "

GT5... not the best racer, and not the best graphics of its time.

so there, that's why it's the worst of the series in my opinion. that's why i gave it two scores. as just a game, it's brilliant. but when compared to the legacy of past GTs that have dominated the market, GT5 sucks.

Gran Turismo evolved and it just be the "best racer" is so little that it became the "best sim". While others are doing what GT did in the past, it again leads us to a new automotive reality.

It's about time for it to be considered the GOD of racing again.

And about graphics... what other racing on the market had better graphics than GT5??? It's the KING.

it's a bit unfair to rate the game based on expectation. Because of the long development, the expectation just got unrealisticly high. if Gt5 were released two years earlier, the review would be completely different. Ps3 has its limitation and it does not do everything. 1080p@60fp output is a huge achievement. With at most 16 cars on track with dynamic lighting, it way too demanding for PS3. If it's on PC, i'm sure it would be much better. so you can't solely blame the developers ability on graphics.

it's also unfair to compare with previous iterations in terms of market dominence. You know, before this gen, there isn't much of a competition on consoles. i'm glad that gt5 can still entertain me like previous iterations.

Overall, it's a good and honest review. I like it.

A.I.:

In one word, the A.I., as a GT game, is absolute shit.

There just isn’t any other way to describe it. After so many years of GT games having shitty A.I., I thought that finally, with this new console generation, they could come up with some sort of way to fix it. But no, they didn’t. It’s still shit.

The worst part of it is that they just ignore you completely wherever you are on track. They will slam into you, cause you to spin, keep on going, whatever, even if you’re right there in front of you; even if you’re just driving the racing line; even if you just park your car on the track. They will smash into you without a second glance.

The start of every race is always chaos. You try to get in the best possible position, avoiding everyone, braking before the first corner, then someone slams into you from behind and you smash into the wall. So very familiar. Even as you overtake a slower car, he will smash into you on the next corner that you have to brake on. This is how previous GTs went. This is still how GT5 goes.

They also drive like little girls most of the time. Few of them have the guts to dive down the inside and brake late to overtake. I see this especially in B-Spec but also in A-Spec, they’re just cowards following a routine. Following a race of AI drivers always feels like status quo; nothing changes.

As mentioned, B-Spec A.I. just absolutely sucks. You tell your driver to slow down and on the next corner he overspeeds and spins out. You tell him to maintain his pace and instead he slows down and gets overtaken. I tell you, whoever you hire in B-Spec is an idiot. You have to cajole him and give him such a huge horsepower advantage in order for him to win.

However, there are a lot of significant improvements in this game. Cars now frequently give way when a faster car moves to overtake. There are times that they are able to cut the lead on you despite you doing consistent laptimes, though this could be due to the ‘rubber band’ principle (cars in the back get a horsepower advantage), but I’m not sure of that. They are also far more aggressive and are very willing to go wheel to wheel with you, though sometimes they are just far TOO aggressive.

Of course, these problems are also present in other racing games as well, and in some games, they are far worse. There is no such thing as perfect A.I., and we should be aware that every game suffers from some clunky computer decision making from time to time. GT5’s racers are actually far more competitive and difficult than other A.I. racers out there. Sometimes I lose even with a faster car, especially when they get really aggressive.

It’s just that it’s already GT5. I expected more after 5 games.

Gran Turismo A.I. score: 5.5

Just a Game A.I. score: 8.0

Actually the reason for this is the slipstream implementation.

There are very significant advantages in GT5 in being behind a car instead of being far out front ( and if you are far out back with no car close you are screwed..)

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Slipstreaming in GT5 is a godsend.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

It's one major improvement over the previous GT.

It does make the kart races real weird though ( some tracks you never have to brake except when in middle of the pack where the slipstream increases your speed by 12 mph and suddenly you have to brake at every turn..)

Ok let me ask this to all those complaining about non premium cars graphics.

How many cars do you own ?

How often do you actually drive with the interior car view on ?

Because honestly if my car had no graphics at all, I woudn't see the difference....

I own 40 standard and 15 premium, either way I always drive behind the car. But I always whince when I press L1 to look behind me and I see my car in all its "glory", especially when my standard car gets "damaged" .

First off, I'd like to begin with my closing comments as well as the score for those who don't want to read the whole extensive review. This review will include every facet of the game seen from the eyes of a lifelong Gran Turismo fan and car enthusiast, as well as just a gamer enjoying a game (there will be 2 scores). Trust me in that "I know what I'm talking about" in games and cars. I've been around them long enough. This review will not, however, just sing the praises of the game just because I'm a fan. The fact is that the game has flaws that I will state clearly and not just cover up for the sake of fandom; truly, I find it is my duty to point them out so that the next Gran Turismo can be better than this one.

Closing comments:

Gran Turismo 5 is a mix of some amazing things and some frankly shitty things too. From the eyes of a Gran Turismo fan rating a Gran Turismo game, it's a shock how low the series has gone. Because Kazunori Yamauchi has totally spoiled us throughout our lives with amazing perfection in his games, we have come to expect far more than this iteration is able to deliver. However, as just a gamer purely enjoying a game, it's one of the best on the current generation of consoles. All in all, while it doesn't compare well to the GTs of old, it outclasses every other racing game out there and delivers physics, gameplay, and artistry that rivals any other game franchise.

As a Gran Turismo game: 7.8

As Just a Game: 9.4

I'm interested in reading your review , but first I need you to answer this question, please: Were you at level 30 in the game when you wrote the review? and I don't ask because of "unlocking damage" or anything about that, but rather because I want to know if you experienced at least 95% of the game before "reviewing". So how much is your completion percentage right now, huh?

no it's not.

try this: park your car on the racing line and don't move. just wait for the AI cars to come by.

they will not miss you. they will slam right into you whether or not you're there. i promise you, the AI is just insane.
