Folklore is not a RPG, its more an action graphic novel game.

Yep, Sony western Studios had done great jobs bringing us God of War 3, Uncharted 1 2, Infamous, Killzone 2 3, Resistance 123, Little Big Planet 1 2, but what happen to Japan Studio?? They only a give us The Last Guardian and GT5 in the recent years as big releases (White Knight dissapoint so much that I just want to ignore it), where are my new Wild Arms? New Arc the Lad? Demon Souls is the only exception and heck, they have lost exclusivity for the sequel.

Have to admit it as a Sony fan that M$ done better in scoring big JRPG by handling in loads on money to Square-Enix, and Tales studio, also the Sakaguchi studio. Hopefully after the latest revival of PS3 in the Japan, and the new Tales game back to PS3, more quality JRPG will come back to the big behemoth.

Is not fair to exclude the DS

Hrm... I guess of those, the Wii has the most variety, and Fire Emblem really helps me there. But frankly, they all pale in comparison to the PS1. I'd put the DS in 2nd, and then I'd have to think hard as to whether the PSP or GBA gets 3rd...

-On a quest for the truly perfect game; I don't think it exists...

Zelda and Demon's Souls are Dungeon Crawlers.

it seems a lot of people are arguing about that..

oh and Folklore is as much of an RPG as Devil May Cry, its not an RPG AT ALL , its a (Repetitive) button masher, when i came into this site a lot of people were saying its an RPG which made me buy it and got disappointed.

And Super Paper Mario is in no way or form a RPG   O.o

Take it from someone who's completed the game, yes it is.  In fact, it's more of an RPG than a platformer, the emphasis is squarely on grinding, subsystems and exploration (just like Paper Mario 1-2), only now everything's realtime.

But the gameplay is nowhere near a RPG.

Uh, have you played it?  All it did is take Paper Mario and make it realtime without a separate battle screen, the structure, subsystems and progression are definitely RPG based.  Basically, if Paper Mario's not an RPG, then neither is any action RPG on the list (Fable II/III, Infinite Undiscovery, Folklore, etc).

"All it did is take Paper Mario and make it realtime"

Thus making it a whole other game and genre. The gameplay is much closer to the platformer genre.

And of course I played it. It's my biggest disappointment this gen.

So... if a game's realtime, it's not an RPG?  Mana, Star Ocean, Tales of, Kingdom Hearts, Dark Cloud, Ys, Fable, MegaMan Battle Network... none of them are RPGs?

I'm honestly at a bit of a loss of how anyone can actually play the game and still say "Super Paper Mario is in no way or form a RPG".  Unless maybe they have no idea what an RPG actually is... how exactly would you define an RPG?

If Super Paper Mario is a RPG then you should add at least Too human, Forza motorsport and crackdowns. Because you "level up" on those games.

Right now: Not sure between Sony or MS but only for LO and Demon's Soul. LO is your typical good JRPG but Demon's Soul also looked interesting to me.

In the future: Wii no contest. We already know Xenoblade is one of the best RPGs this gen from JP impressions, and TLS seems like it could be as well.

I wouldn't call Zelda dungeon grinder...the overworld has a bunch of stuff to do. You also need to progress through there to get to dungeons. Plus there's also towns and such.

Not to mention most Dungeon Crawlers tend to have fairly bland and repetitive dungeon design, something that cannot be said of either Zelda or Demon's Souls, both of which have an originalness and attention to detail in their landscapes seen in few other titles.  Dungeon Crawlers focus primarily on grinding, with little care for anything else.

Out of the games in the OP, I've only Super Paper Mario. -_-

I really should just grab myself by the balls and get Demon's Souls already. It looks great, but I always either never have enough free time to warrant picking it up, or have too many other games to buy.

I think we have forgotten Valkyra Chronicles, which was a good RPG for Sony, its a shame they put the sequels on PSP. it couldve been a nice little series for Sega.

its a real shame we dont have many RPGs on the PS3, the best ones are arguably going to be Xenoblade, the Last Story and Mass Effect. although we are getting ME2, we probabily wont get Xenoblade and the Last Story, depite FF13 being based on the PS3.

so its a shame, but now Sony are focusing on their 1st party, Naughty Dog etc are delivering in other areas. but i wish they would revive some old IPs, like Legend of Dragoon, which was completely overshadowed by FF in the PS1 era. that wouldnt happen if it released on the PS3 now. athough its not going to happen, i would like it to.
