Forums - Sales - Mario Kart Wii on track for 25 million 2010, best selling all time?

Pineapple said:

Actually, that's not completely true. I've had quite a keen eye on Mario Kart Wii, as I even before it launched insisted it would be the best selling game of the generation, barring Wii Sports and Wii Play.

I don't think it will be now, though. New Super Mario Bros. Wii will be less than 4 million behind Mario Kart Wii by the start of 2011 (I have them at ~ 24.75 million vs 21 million), and it's selling at a far higher pace.

It's also likely to lose to Wii Sports Resort. Mario Kart Wii will only have a 1-1.5 million (24.75 vs ~ 23.5) lead on Wii Sports Resort by the end of the year, and Wii Sports Resort too has a far higher momentum.

I'm not sure how high Mario Kart Wii will go. It looks to be selling around 4 million in 2010, quite a lot down from the 7.3 million of 2009. I've nearly always said Mario Kart Wii will definitely exceed 30 million, but now I'd say that 30 million seems to be pretty much exactly where it will end. It could reach 35 million with a platinum release and a long generation.

Wii Sports Resort and New Super Mario Bros. Wii should both end in the 35-45 million range, which ends higher I have no idea.

Making an "expected top 10 games" list could be interesting. The only game I really see challenging the very top is New Super Mario Bros. DS. It's pretty much selling neck-to-neck with Mario Kart Wii as of right now. However, its sales will die out slightly sooner, due to the DS death being before the Wii's, so 28-33 million seems like a likely result for it.

So excluding my expected top 2 obviously bundled games, and Wii Play, the list becomes

1. New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 35-45 million
1. Wii Sports Resort - 35-45 million
3. Mario Kart Wii - 30-35 million
4. Pokemon Blu/Red - 31.37 million
4. New Super Mario Bros. DS - 28-33 million
6. Tetris - 30.26 million
7. Duck Hunt - 28.31 million

After that, it gets a bit tricky. You have Nintendogs ending in the 25-26 million range, Black Ops possibly making a number near that height, Wii Fit Plus possibly making that high a number, and then Mario Kart DS which should see 22-24 million or so. Also, Pokemon Gold/Silver at 23.10 million

I'd say this seems the most likely

8. Nintendogs - 25-26 million
9.  Mario Kart DS - 22-24 million

10. Pokemon Gold/Silver - 23.10 million

(With the possibility of Black Ops or Wii Fit Plus beating MKDS or Gold/Silver).

So a bit more lengthy an answer than you asked for, but I'd say that Mario Kart Wii is fairly certainly going to end in the 3rd to 5th best selling non-bundled game of all time range, depending on how Nintendo plays this generation and how they handle Player's Choice. Most likely 3rd spot.

NMSB has benefitted from bundling recently. If MK gets bundled too, then NMSB will have a hard time catching up. NMSB legs could be cut a bit short if a new console is released by Nintendo as well. MK could still take the checkered flag in the end.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Let's have a look then. The sales from the start of May 2010 until the start of November 2010, which is before NSMB Wii was bundled.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 2249k
Mario Kart Wii - 1232k

It's not just the bundle that has boosted New Super Mario Bros. Wii, it was selling nearly 2:1 before it as well. Now, granted, Mario Kart Wii has been out for ages longer. Let's compare to how Mario Kart Wii was doing in the same period in 2009.

Mario Kart Wii - 2606k

That's actually higher. And that's even considering Mario Kart Wii had been out for over a year at the start of the period, whereas New Super Mario Bros. Wii had only been out for 24 weeks. Let's compare the period of February 2009/2010 (2009 for MKWii, 2010 for NSMB Wii) to the start of November. Note that for this comparison, both have had only one holiday season, but MKWii has been out for 8 months longer

New Super Mario Bros.  - 4595k
Mario Kart Wii - 4102k

These numbers make me suspect that while New Super Mario Bros. Wii had a bigger launch and immediate sales, Mario Kart Wii might have better legs. Let's have a look at how the comparison was just before the bundles started kicking in. October 2010 sales

New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 444k
Mario Kart Wii -  225k

So while Mario Kart Wii had better legs, it doesn't have enough better legs. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is still going to pass it at some point in Q3 next year, and I doubt NSMB Wii's sales will start dipping below Mario Kart Wii's sales anytime soon then. Maybe later in the generation, but too late.

They're definitely going to be closer than I expected, though. 30-35 for MKWii and 35-40 for NSMB Wii seems fairer than my previous suggestion.

And looking further at it, Wii Sports Resort is definitely going to outsell both.

WSR is also bundles for months now I think. At least in Europe.

Think for yourself, question authority

Wii Sports Resort is definitely helped by massive bundling. It's a smart strategy though for Nintendo.

Bloody bundles making everything so hard. I'm starting to feel a bit inclined to do a quarter-by-quarter comparison of the games now, to see their sales perseverance. Particularly for Mario Kart Wii.

Mario Kart Wii:
Quarter 2 2008 (launch quarter) - 6081k
Q3 08 - 2113k
Q4 08 - 5141k

Q1 09 - 1829k (drop of 13.5% from last non-holiday quarter)
Q2 09 - 1310k (drop of 28.4%)
Q3 09 - 1164k (drop of 11.2%)
Q4 09 - 3074k (drop of 40% since from previous holiday quarter)

Q1 '10 - 1032k (drop of 11.4% since last non-holiday quarter)
Q2 '10 - 770k (drop of 25.4%)
Q3 '10 - 524k (drop of 32%)

Q4'10 - So far 642k, looking to be around 1750k

This doesn't really bone too well for Mario Kart Wii. Its sales being so much higher than mostly everything else's makes it hard to see that it really is dropping a notch over 7% a month.

With no bundle, Mario Kart Wii's next year sales would, according to the trends, be something ala

Q1 '11 -  450k
Q2 '11 - 340k
Q3 '11 - 275k
Q4 '11 - 1050k
Total: 2205k

I'd expect the numbers to be slightly higher than that, but not by much. 2250-2750k seems likely, unless the bundling is excessive.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii up next.

Q4 09 (launch quarter) - 9962k
Q1 '10 - 3486k
Q2 '10 - 1675k (drop of 51%)
Q3 '10 - 795k (drop of 51%
Q4 '10 - 1678k, likely to be around 5000k, but this number is heavily inflated by bundles)

Still, if there was no bundle, New Super Mario Bros. Wii's sales would, with a slightly lower drop than last year's (lower absolute sales practically always means a lower drop)

Q1 '11 - 1000k (40% down from Q3 '10)
Q2 '11 - 600k
Q3 '11 - 360k
Q4 '11 - 1500k (this one is quite hard to estimate)
Total - 3460k

So I guess you do have a point. If there were no bundles, and everything followed the same trend as it already has, New Super Mario Bros. Wii would never catch Mario Kart Wii.

Now, the truth is that New Super Mario Bros. Wii does have more bundling. Apparently, Mario Kart Wii already has gotten a bundle in Europe (but it hasn't reached into any of the numbers on VGC yet), so that should be interesting to see.

Even with just that bundle, Mario Kart Wii does actually have a fair chance to best New Super Mario Bros. Wii. And Wii Sports Resort's sales could easily be cut off by another Wii series game, or be eliminated by replacing Wii Sports. I guess you're right, Mario Kart Wii does stand a good chance of becoming the best selling non-bundled game of all time. Personally, I'm really rooting for that.

Actually it's bundled, even if the most of its sales were without bundles (about 22-23m). If it reaches 30m we can say it would have achieved 25m even without bundles though.

Bundle started... today.

Really? Well I was just underlining that from this holiday on it's not "not-bundled" anymore and a part of its total sales (over 30m IMHO) will be because of the bundles. NSMBW will have the same problem, it sold 16m without bundles but will pass 25m because of the crazy sales of this holidays thanks to the bundle.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

I think we should include bundles it sold what it sold imo.

I'm not sure what you mean. Everybody here is including bundles in everything. If you're talking about my post, I just used the "without bundles" to see how we could expect them to fare without bundles. How much the bundles will do, and how long they will last, is currently unknown, so we can't really speculate with them as easily.
