Even though GT5 has the avantage of releasing during the holiday season, I'm interested to see how it tracks compared to MH3tri. Because the latter had a bigger opening was considered a flop by quite a few people.

You want to compare those two games?
Why not? GT definitely has the advantage but I think it might have the potention to turn out to be interesting... GT also has a much bigger presence on consoles than Monster Hunter, which has the bulk of its audience primarily on handhelds - but I think it's a fun and fair comparsion.

Monster Hunter is a MUCH MUCH bigger franchise in Japan than GT, it's not even close. You only get to say this because the Wii version sold like a GT games rather than a Monster Hunter game.
On console, I think it's a fair comparison.
No, it's not. GT will sell more this week than MH wii sold so far.
Worldwide, of course. GT is a much bigger franchise than Monster Hunter is worldwide - whether it's on console or handheld. But where else would this comparison be even remotely interesting besides Japan?
And in Japan, GT is big but has been in steady decline on home console (the sole PSP version, I won't really consider since we don't have PSN sales). Monster Hunter has only become comparable in sales to GT on home console solely due to the Wii iteration. It wasn't until the game landed on a handheld did it find an audience and steadily increase in sales with each iteration.
Again, I don't see what the beef is.
