Forums - Sony - will PSN ever have cross game chat?

well i used x-chat over the weekend as live was free, its a brilliant idea and i really want sony to implement it.

x-game chat premium browser will make psn sales rocket id deffo get it then.

the only plus side on psn chat is that its a higher quality than live chat

I really think to all those who are saying "I'm playing X game so everyone and their mother playing X game should only be able to communicate with X game"......guys its the PS3 half the people online dont even have mics. So I think this should be implemented and I think for the most part games that require communication, gamers will communicate if they can.

I am no good at grammar =)

DAMN IT! This EP is such a good idea

Maybe it just can't do it?

I mean its 4 years in. Perhaps its time Sony just admit the PS3 wasn't designed to do something so incredibly complex.

well its 4 years in and you still wont accept the fact ps3 has more processing power than xbox which is already doing cross game chat.

maybe if they take a lot of the junk out the in-game xmb, they can free some space for a decent feature.

btw cross game chat is also no.1 on playstation blog ideas so im sure their not just ignoring it. i dont even think that many people will use it because they dont even talk in the games their playing, why would they bother talking to people playing other games? sony did a good job not dishing out free headsets, its a much more peaceful environment to play. although i just love watching all those xbl (and occasionally ps3) whiny kid videos on youtube.

The reason? Firmware updates come out of Japan. Japan as a whole doesn't take multiplayer at all that seriously compared to the west. If the firmware updates had come from somewhere like U.S.A. that feature would have been enabled sometime in 2008 at the very latest. However you would have missed out on those funny updates for photo viewing etc, so its not a good tradeoff.

Tease.

According to various developers on gaf, this feature has actually been in the ps3's SDK since mid-2009 or so.  Nobody knows why it hasn't made its way into firmware released to the public, however.

It was quite clear back in June that SCE had intended to include the feature in PS Plus, but removed it at the least second (without informing the smaller arms of SCEE, apparently, which is why it appeared on the PS Plus feature list for numerous countries for a few hours before they rectified the problem).

I hope that they removed it from PS Plus due to the backlash over the mere idea of limiting it to the plan, with the intent of guaging the reception of PS Plus without it, which will hopefully lead to it being made available to all PSN members in the future.

Edit:

Honestly, at this point I'm thinking they may be saving it for some sort of PSP2 announcement.  They may be planning to make a big deal out of the feature by not only announcing cross game chat, but also cross platform chat.

I think SCEJ's focus on PSP2 is the reason PS3 firmware updates have slowed considerably this past year.

This sounds really cool.

It's not that big of a deal. I never use it on my 360,as I don't have any xbox live freinds. lol

Sony can't implement because of legal issues if i'm not mistaken..

I hope not.  I actually dislike the whole idea of it.

I for one would love to know why. How dare someone want to talk to someone else playing a different game, or even have the option to do so. Right? *facepalm*

Because to me it's like chatting while watching a film - something I'd personally make sure people get chucked out the cinema for.  I just find it a waste.  Why would you play, say, Uncharted 2 SP and want to chat at the same time to someone playing God of War?

On another note, so far as I am aware, since the launch of PSN Plus cross game chat has been worked out but not released for some reason.  Not sure why.

Because I talk to friends a lot and we don't own the same games, so it's nice to be able to talk to several people at the same time? Then again, we're all either playing Gears of War, Rock Band, or Call of Duty, so I'm not really sure how any of those are like watching movies. A large number of 360 games focus on multiplayer and don't attempt to be cinematic or like films.

EDIT: You still haven't given a reason why it shouldn't be offered other than the fact that you don't want it. Nobody's going to force you to use it, y'know.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

You're indeed mistaken.

I accept the the PS3 has more processing power. Why would I deny? Its just a fact. I also accept the PS3 wasn't designed to do simple features found on the 360.

Your avatar aside, its pretty obvious you're a Sony fan because you're actually boasting about Sony having an inferior voice chat system. If you don't want to hear people its simple to mute all voice chat. Cross game chat is a simple feature a lot of people enjoy and many Sony fans are begging for. Just accept MS did voice chat better with the 360.
