Yep, the government wants everyone to think they have teeth over this issue. In reality they can't do much about it. Apart from maybe get him arrested on molestation charges. The cynic in me finds the timing of those allegations very convenient.

Each country would keep a small militia (National Guard like) for civil issues and natural disasters, but they wouldn't operate abroad. And we'd save a ton of money. All the defence companies could go too. The major difference would be that we'd probably lose the Falkland Islands to Argentina, and Afghanistan would go back to being lawless. I think it's worth it.

That's exactly why the army in countries that have sych a thing will never be shut down. Defence companies have too great financial interest to allow this to happen and they obviusly have great influence in the Governments. This is also a reason why there are so many pointless conflicts: to justify military spending.
Not to mention that people working in the army probably have no interest in the army being shut down, as that would mena they'd be out of a job.

Yep convenient indeed. I also read on the BBC news website that the Swedish lawyer trying to get him arrested is also a politician of some sort.
Pretty cool how several governments are so pissed off :)
Congratulations to Julian for facing 'the system'.

You know that the charges are preexisting right? They just decided to persue him for questioning again recently.

The charges are pre-existing from when he released the Afghan/Iraq war documents.

Explain how these leaks will harm democracy and freedom.

This guy is a dick. |
Point 1) how will that hurt democracy and freedom? I consider it a good thing if countries share less information. For example, I definitely don't want European governments sharing personal banking data with the US, as was being proposed a while ago. (for "counter-terrorism" purposes. the US is going crazy with counter-terrorism, see the ongoing TSA crap)
Point 2) So you're saying that either there are no leaks or if there are (as is now happening), there won't be any more leaks due to layers of secrecy? So in what way do these leaks harm anything if the consequence is exactly the same?

The logical course if he was some kind of terrorist, serial killer, etc.
The guy has not been formally charged with any crime in Sweden.
Then again, I'm not sure if you are serious.
