is that figure from official Sony retail or does it include speculation on imports?

Actually, it doesn't show that at all. It isn't like a console needs to sell well in all territories - according to these numbers, the DS is even lower than the Wii in Brazil. That still won't stop it from flying past PS2's lifetime numbers with ease edit: Not that I think the Wii will pass the PS2, still unsure at this point. But it's just like the 360 v PS3, the 360 has a shot at holding onto second, even with low JP numbers |
I think it's not completely fair to compare handheld to home console when it comes to sales. Handheld is sold to one individual and home console is sold to one household. Just look at Japan. There are over 47 million handhelds sold this gen. It would be pretty much impossible to home consoles to match those numbers when you consider that population of Japan is 127 million. This is also why DS will outsell PS2 rather easily even without support of developing countries. It's simply pulling numbers that are impossible for home consoles to match. This is why Wii doesn't have chance to match PS2 sales as it has same restriction as PS2. Of course it could outsell PS2 in USA and maybe in Europe but without Japan and developing countries there is just too much sales to make up in those two markets especially as Wii is already seriously slowing down in in USA and Europe. It's also pretty much impossible for Wii to sell same kind of numbers in developing countries compared to PS2 because Nintendo just doesn't have as big distribution network as Sony. Not to mention that after successor is launched it will die quickly without third party support.

I dont follow, i like these numbers of course. but is this tracked on vgchartz?? because this 5m number is massive.
Edit. i just saw PS2 is 5mil and PS3 is 750k, still this makes more sense. still very impressive number. it makes sense that the popularity of the PS2 has driven demand for PS3.
Hopefully this leads to another adjustment up for PS3 and PS2 numbers :)
Yay, more reasons to have seperate charts on the side for each country in the americas. MUHAHAHAHA

Lol that was funny and unexpected, I didn't know you were from Brasil. Yeah, I agree with you, this comment is... very strange, to say the least. I usually see people taking bus and walking around here with a PSP, iPhone or DS on their hands. |
I have 3 friends, 1 with a PSP and 2 with DS, they NEVER play out of home or college. I Never listen to my iPod Touch eather.
So, violence is clearly a reason handhelders are not so popular in Brasil.
What about the numbers, I used to imagine that there would be 10-15mi PS2 in Brasil, 95% of then "jailbreacked". In fact I`ve never seen a original PS2 game or blocked console.
The same thing was in corse whit 360. But now Live is getting stronger and PS3 faces a real competition by Microsoft.
And Nintendo, hunn... I just have to say that Wii games are more expencive here than PS3 or 360 games. Its a lost market for Nintendo by now.
I want to know about data in Paraguay, I`m sure that the numbers are much higher than brazilian because the numbers of console imported (most of then illegal) do not enter in the official brazilian numbers. But I think there is no data there. The video games in Paraguay are imported majoritary of USA, so the numbers count for this country? If this is correct, part of Brazilian market is computed in the USA numbers.
Sorry if I`m not so clear, is because of my poor English.

People won't walk around with them but you can see them being used in buses as me and a few others pointed out. Who walks around on the street playing a handheld anyway?
Violence may have a small impact, but it's nothing important. Besides, small things are even easier to import (and get pass withouth being checked and taxed) so the difference in price may be even higher between import and retail. It's also not so expensive so people have more confidence in buying it from a not-so-trusted source. All in all there are many possible explanations for the numbers of portables here, and violence's a really not a good one.
Most people do hack their consoles, but it's not that hard to find people with non-hacked consoles either. I think maybe this has to do with location too, as Brazil is pretty big and diverse.
The Wii situation is indeed funny, but they too could grow a nice market with some effort and incentive as Sony is doing. Of course it's harder for them since they don't have the network already in place.
