Forums - Sales - Biggest gen ever or will every gen outdo the last?

What Halo 3 did is much more impressive then what any COD game did in it's first week. Why? Because in 2007, the install base was tiny. COD has had a MUCH bigger install base to sell to. When you factor that into it and adjust...Halo 3 would have sold something like 20 million copies in it's first week.

Nothing has ever come close to Halo 3's sales.

I actually think that we're approaching a sort of bubble, with how games sell. Development costs are skyrocketing, not in line with the actual increase in sales. I'm not sure whether next gen or the one after that, but I do think there will be a crashing down, back to earth, if you will. Obviously, gaming won't die, but I do think that costs will come back in line, and with games being less flashy, we may lose some of the people who buy on the 'wow' factor, thus making sales smaller. The costs will come down enough, though, so that games can still be considerably more profitable.

With Japan launch PS3 version of Black ops should pass Halo 3. Definitely gaming indrusty has grown a lot this gen. Too bad that developing costs have risen even more.

i'll second that

agreed but wht would you say the reason for that is? i think the advancement in tech will be cheaper; well maybe not next gen though.

I think the reason will be an accelleration of companies either losing more money faster, or going bankrupt (or both). The huge companies will be hurt, but stick around. Companies like RockStar I think will die. (They lost how much the quarter GTA4 released?) Small companies are going to be hit-and-miss; ones smart with their development will survive, foolhardy companies will die.

i totaly agree. thats why im in favor of extending this gen for another five yrs so the big 3 pub' a dev can work with lower cost of doing business.

i beleave thats one of the ways to get cost down.

Will we one day see a single game sell over 10 million first week?

Well if we include Japanese and DD PC sales, Black Ops probably broke 10 million.  I can't really see this gen taking all the top spots though.  That would mean we'd need 7 more 4 million launches.

Sorry what I really meant was on one platform. Not several platforms.

I think the game industry is the part of the entertainment industry that is still in puberty (I just mean growing fast) as opposed to the stable books, movies and music industries. So every gen will be larger than the previous till we get to the gen that it stabilizes and the game industry is neither growing nor shrinking.

Yeh but unlike books, movies and music video games has way to much  potential to keep changing, I don't think it's ever going to stabilize. Every generation there's something new that brings in new consumers, can you imagine how different video games is going to be in 50 years?

Those are not the top selling games though. I seriously get annoyed with this weekly, first day sales as they are not really an indication on the best selling games this Generation.
