@everyone: Please start learning how to read charts. What they did is estimate year end figures and then assumed linear sales within each year, leaving out seasonal variances. This does not mean they assume the PS3 to start outselling the Wii next week but rather in 2008 in total.

Actually, they should learn how to MAKE charts. As you shouldn't make a chart like that. Instead you should make it a bar graph, with each year being represented. I mean, that's one of the things you learn in Marketing research 101. Doesn't help that that looks like a Microsoft Excel chart instead of a more respectable statsitics program chart.

Hmm it may not look very likely now, but I think there is a good possibility. 360/PS3 have almost the same games: you could call them a platform. Together they outsell the Wii by a nice margin. I don't think this will change. They will also have a much more critical acclaimed library. The Wii is on its own here and most important Nintendo franchises will be through when Smash has been released. There are one or two "defectors" like Monster Hunter but third-party support is very lackluster and this doesn't seem to change in the next year(s).

So we have three possibilities:

1. The Wii opens up a huge new casual gamer market like the DS and outsells 360+PS3.

2. 360+PS3 continue to outsell the Wii and 360 and PS3 continue to carve up the market 50/50 (Perhaps divided into US(360) and Rest(PS3)

3. 360+PS3 continue to outsell the Wii and the PS3 crushes the 360 (and with this outsells the Wii)

I think all three possibilities are equally probable. We have seen that the PS3 needed a 400$ price and some games to reach 360 level. Let's see what some great exclusives can do. In my opinion once the PS3 enters the first 300$ and then 200$ mark(perhaps with a redesign) the Wii will go down (or they need to bring the Wii2) Let's see.

I don't Understand, are you implying that smash is nintendo's last killer app, that will move consoles?  I am not too sure what you are trying to say here.

And the Part about 360 and PS3 being one platform, doesn't even make sanse, not even sony and microsoft spin it like that, so why should you. Do you think if a multiplatform game sells a copy on the PS3 it benefits Microsoft or vice versa. And lets take the combined sales of the 360 and PS3 ww this week for example. they only outsold the Wii by itself a measly 100,000. When i buy a PS3, that will in no way benefit Microsoft.

Wii could see a slowdown in sales in 08. Its entirely possible that PS3 could sell 100 million. Me i think ps3 will be last when the Wii2/xbox720 launch but will probably outsell them both LTD. If ps3 does get its 10 yrs, carries on to 2016 then its probable it will hit 100 million. I guess will know when all the December figures are in. Personally I dont care, as long as the DS crushes all beneath it then I'm happy. Incidentally does anyone have 12 DS systems and 46 games like me?

WOW! Why do you need 12 DS?

Nope I only bought 4 DS, 2 Wii's, 2 360's and 3 PS3's

I do plan on getting more but I doubt I will ever hit 12!

Either way... think about it like this. If it isn't going to DRASTICALLY increase and start of the year, that means it's going to have to start selling even more ridiculiously drastic towards the middle and end of the year... most likely if they even did monthly charts (which it looks like they didn't because there is no year to year increase of PS3, just completely steady line after the boost.).

So if it's not going to outsell the Wii in a couple months it means it's REALLY going to have to start outselling the Wii by A LOT the rest of the year. Pretty much the PS3 will need to sell more consoles per month than anyone for the middle to end of next year.

It is funny for me watching people argue this. Everyone keeps saying the increase is over all and might not start in the begining of January. The funny part is the prediction is most plausible if you assue the PS3 does get its January sales jump through the roof. To get an overall sales increase like that would require a ludicrously high spike at the end of the year. This prediction is nonsense.

I'm amused by the fact that the Screen Digest prediction also has the PS3 passing the 360 in lifetime sales by the end of 2008, which has been discussed on this website in some detail. (It would require the PS3 to outsell the 360 by more than 650k units per month, over the course of a full year. Not going to happen!) Yet another indication that these folks should stop taking their crazy pills.

End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)

 Dang straight.

Also: I predict the Nokia N-Gage will outsell all portable and home platforms COMBINED by 2008.

I mean, the end of 2008, of course sales won't spike in January.

I mean, please pay attention to me right now, but forget this prediction in December 2008 so you'll listen to my next crazy prediction, thanks!

*Draws a pie graph even though it should be a bar graph* I lies wit statistax! YAY!

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

Also, before someone who is just a Sony fanboy jumps to defend them...

You should realize they also predict that neither HD-DVD or Blu-Ray will win and that both formats will survive until combined players are the norm.

bornfist: I am saying that smash is the last big nintendo franchise after that third party devs need to step into the void. There are only few making really good games for the wii so this could be bad for the wii. Its all about the games.

And for 360/ps3 being one platform: almost all games for 360/ps3 next year will be available on both systems with minor differences. Yes there will be some exclusives but in the end it doesn't matter much which of the two consoles you pick the games will be the same. Yes there are exclusives but the number is getting smaller. The wii gets completely different games. So there are two questions: which camp will win: casual games with innovative controls or hd games. A completely unrelated question is which hd console will win. One good thing for the ps3 and 360 is that porting doesn't seem to be so terribly expensive anymore therefore even the looser will get many games
