Forums - Nintendo - Which third party company is simply going to miss the Wii boat?

I've been waiting for someone to say Square, because I don't think this is nearly as silly an answer as some people may instinctively make it out to be.

Knee jerk response: they're giving the Wii DQS, Chocobo's Dungeon, and FFCC!

Next response: Crystal Chronicles has been heavily rumored to be in trouble (and was pulled from Square's Jump Fest), DQS is a spinoff and was not well recieved, and Chocobo's Dungeon is also a spin off and we have no idea how big a deal it will be.

Add on to this that Nomura seems to be a big fan of cinematic stylings, FMVs, and has publicly praised the PS3, and I think there's credence to rumors that he's not a huge fan of the Wii. Until I see something beyond Spinoffs announced from Square -- DQ X, Star Ocean 4, Chrono Trigger, Kingdom Hearts 3, or something of that nature -- I remain skeptical of their actual investment in the Wii.

I think if spinoffs count as missing the boat then that supports my argument that most third parties will miss the boat.  But I'll stop beating a dead horse and let you guys discuss individual studios.

I imagine some of the third parties with the closest ties to MS and Sony, like Bungie and Insomniac, will not be giving the Wii much support. It's only a matter of time before the difference in install base, and cost of development is going to make the Wii too attractive for almost any developer to completely ignore.

Remember, a lot of the current 360/PS3 games were started way before it became apparent the Wii was going to end on top. The Wii games getting released now either started when there was still some doubt left on who was going to be the winner, or switched consoles. It'll still take around a year, but it's already pretty safe to say the biggest groups of games are going to be Wii exclusives, 360/PS3 multiplats, and then exclusives to the HD consoles in that order.

I also started this gen loving Ubisoft for their early support and disliking Capcom for disbanding Clover, but the quality of latter games has reversed my views on the two.

That's not entirely true.

I never saw TCB on any Jump Festa list and I don't really believe the EGM rumors since they're so extremely vague. Chocobo's Dungeon isn't a spinoff, it turned into its own series nearly a decade ago and sells better than FFCC. A lot of people don't realize it but that could actually end up being SE's biggest seller of the 3 games.

All of them

When a big title comes we will know it but so far even the believers (Capcom) a still not sure. They are all a little too intimidated by Nintendo's in house software and will be until the Wii hits twice the sales it is at now.

Ubisoft - My biggest contender for actually trying. Red Steel was rushed sure, but that happens will all consoles. They have 2 million sellers and jsut annouced they are going to put more time to "bring Wii titles up to Nintendo level quality". They are making games in all genres and Wii players are responding.

Sega- Do to their dismal results for years the recent hits on the Wii will make them dependent on it for Survival. They are weak now, but if they ever do release a good big game it will be on the Wii.

EA- Crapfest as usual. But they are like that for all the systems. Hopefully in a couple of years they will have worked the bugs out of their Wii sports titles.

Square- I like all 4 titles coming to the Wii, but these are just theri versions of cash ins. They aren't complete crap but if we don't see any of their big series with glowing FMV sequences then they missed the boat. I don't think we will get Kindom Hearts, DQ is going DS, and will will never see he main Final Fantasy on the Wii.

Capcom - I like Zack & Wiki, but that was made small budget same as the two Redident Evil games. You could probably make all three games 10 times over for what they dump into RE5.

I don' even see anything even worth talking about with the others. Sure Rockstar will probably whore out GTA if Wii gets a big enough user base.

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

In fairness, the Wii version of DDR is the best console version ever made.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Don't get ahead of yourself there. Hottest Party isn't bad, but come on. It has some neat new features, but only 50 songs total (a very large percentage of them lame licensed tracks). Plus: no Speed Mods?! Seriously Konami, wtf? I don't know how they could possibly make such an enormous omission in this day and age, since basically every serious DDR player uses them now.

Compare that to the Japanese version of DDR Extreme: no gimped features, 110 songs, 10 different boss songs, 30 Oni courses, 25 Nonstop courses... do I need to go on? It's not even close. I would really like to see a great new DDR game on the Wii, but Hottest Party is more of a cheap cash-out than a flagship new entry in the series.

I do like the fact that you listed both Tetris and Civilization in your sig though. Two of my all-time favorites.

considering the help nintendo have given them, sega seem very lukewarm to the wii. Even somthing like nights sounds like it's been rather rushed, when it should have been treated like a AAA.

I forgot to add Activision

Guitar Hero 3 is the biggest 3rd party title yet for the Wii. If they can strongarm some DLC through Nintendo they they are offically on board.

This game shows there is plenty of reason to multi-plat major titles. Certain games will be good irregardless of the graphics.

I am still waiting for anyone to say a mjor existing series is headed to the Wii exclusively. No Monster Hunter does not count.

Have any 3rd party companies missed the DS boat?  The Wii is lined up to be far more successful than the DS, so I imagine that 3 years down the road 3rd parties will have approximately the same relationship with the Wii as they have with the DS.

It hasn't exactly been getting sparkling reviews, but let's remember this is Sega we're talking about. Nights might be the best thing they've put out in years...

I see alot of argument for Square becuase they have not done much yet, however, I have a gut feeling that they are gonna through some support our way (Kindom Hearts would sell like crazy, Casuals would buy a disney game and an gamer knows what Square is about)
