Forums - Gaming - The Best Way to release a new IP

Many new IPs these days are having a hard time competing with the big names like cod, halo, etc. The new IPs might have a hard time paying off its development costs. This obviously takes away originality that we gamers need and it discourages many publishers to fund these projects. What do you guys think is the best way for New IPs to release so it could get maximum sales?

My thoughts on a how a new IP could sell well-

1. Publishers should release new IPs at a consoles launch or at least close to it. At lauch there are not many games to choose from so obviously the buyer will  pick up that new IP. Microsoft has done this with Gears, Crackdown, etc. Games like resistance, uncharted, infamous, and LBP also showed up like this.

2. A new IP should release either in a quiet time in spring or during summer. Casual gamers might not buy it because summer is a rather slow period, but the casual gamer will likely not buy the game in the holidays either because they might not think the game is good. Core gamers though will likely buy games year around.

3. The publisher should release the new IP as an EXCLUSIVE title! Exclusives gives fanboys something to boast about and show what games their system has. The new IP actually turns out to be good then the publisher should make the sequels multiplatform to get maximum profit. Obviously rockstar is doing this with AGENT.

I completely agree.

What did the biggest new IP (on HD consoles) this gen do? (i.e. Assassin's Creed)

- Build up huge hype from E3 itself.....introduce the Producer who happens to be a hot woman!

- Amazing marketing on the level of a blockbuster game....and effective marketing (who remembers the Altair leaping from the clock tower Assassins Creed TV commercial? It was stunning...people in school were talking about it) and it had a kind of semi-unique concept..

- Launch early in the gen to get maximum exposure

- Be very good itself

- Release near the holiday season

So I do agree with your points in the OP...but they aren't absolutely necessary.....then again Assassin's Creed is an exception of sorts in terms of a new IP.

The other two really big New Ip's this gen (uncharted, GearS) are exclusive.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I agree with most, although they aren't totally necessary.

Another thing to do would be this -

BUNDLE IT!

exclusives are the way to go but sony and microsoft as they would promote the game as an SCE or MSGS game.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

LBP and Uncharted are SCE games

but really SCE and MSGS release new IP's its the 3rd party developers and Nintendo that aren't releasing any new IP's and really need to start bringing out new IP's and if an 3rd party dev teamed up with one of the big 3 they can really make one successful

i thought lbp was by media molecule and uncharted by naughtydog. unless they teamed up with sony

I agree with everything you said.Alan Wake and Split/Second launched on the same day as a  R* game 6 years in the making....bad move. The people at sega thought it was a good ideas to launch resonance of fate on the same week as Final Fantasy XIII. Vanquish,Enslaved and soon to be Majin will be obliterated because of IPs that's already have a fanbase set in stone. I don't think anyone wants good new IPs to fail but so far the people in the marketing development are pulling moves as stupid as Namco's Tales team.

its been confirmed today that GT5 has a weather system, track editor and go karts! seriously i think this is going to be the best selling in the series even beating GT3 sales of 14 million plus!

A new IP can go far if it is exclusive because Sony, or Microsoft will market it like crazy.
