I agree.

I don't see why MS can't use a proprietary disc format based upon HD-DVD for software. It would make piracy that much more difficult and it would eliminate the multi disc issue and remove the constraints of working within the space of one DVD for developers.

They would have to use something like HD-DVD. A fully proprietary disk just for the next console would drive costs through the roof, both for development and for software developers. They WILL have to adopt some sort of higher storage media in the future, even if it means going cartridge (Think SD cards).

However DVD playback is a huge bonus, so disk will remain the medium of choice for now.

It wouldn't. HD-DVD is a dead format, but a modified version would be fine as a console only disc format. The Dreamcast used a proprietary disc format (GD-ROM) and the Wii uses a proprietary disc format (Wii Optical Disk). It's based on the DVD format, but it is proprietary: 4.7/8.54 GB DVD-based disc (RVL-006).

And flash based memory would only make games more expensive to publishers, even with the continuing trend of falling prices on NAND memory.

It'd be cheaper than BD-Rom possibly as they can use the defunct DVD production lines to fabricate it. I remember that was one of the reasons touted for HD-DVD winning. That means that Microsoft can ask for even more of a cut for game discs since they would own the format too.

Cheaper fabrication due to being able to use the same production lines was definitely one of the advantages of HD-DVD. Hard to believe differences in production cost per disc was made to be such an issue, but that's all history. In the end, the thing that killed HD-DVD boiled down to studio support, which naturally doesn't matter for the purpose of publishing games for a proprietary gaming platform.

They could even go with a dual format platform much like early PS2 games were published on both CD-ROM and DVD depending upon the amount of space a developer needed. DVD or HD-DVD.

Also if they support CH-DVD or their HD-DVD based version it would make it signficantly easier to break into the Chinese market as it would probably garner some sort of official sanction at the higher level. Im sure the Chinese Govt would like the closed nature of the box. They wouldn't need it so much for the west as most people who wanted Blu Ray would have probably got it by then or alternatively dual laser systems work just fine if they want to go down that route.

As for dual format well I kept hearing the words ' forwards compatibility' so maybe thats part of what it is about.

That's why we can't have good open world multiplatform games, because x360 players have to switch disc, and then it's no longer open world, so everything has to be on one disc, yea that's cool for the gaming industry.

Fellow Baby's? what a dumb arse.. all i know is he has a shitty catchphrase lol

Microsoft and Sony are both in a "battle for your living room" and I can't see either of them not having both streaming video services and Blu-Ray compatibility in the next generation ...

With that said, the Wii's lower development cost environment provided an opportunity for small developers to thrive but publishers devoted them to HD projects that often didn't turn out well or sell that well and the company was forced into bankruptcy. Companies like Factor 5 and Free Radical are perfect examples of this.

Even as this generation ends and we move into the next generation there are opportunities for smaller developers if they choose to take them. By developing games for the 3DS, PSP2 or iPhone they could keep development costs reasonable; and they could probably keep their graphics fairly limited if they target a downloadable content or budget game market.

I agree.

San Andreas is bigger than anything in this gen....That is sick...Hope that M$ don't use DVD again. It's not about fanboy wars(sony could be benefitted for that), but using DVD will be bad for gaming industry overall.

Red Dead Redemption
Fallout 3
Fallout: New Vegas
Assassin's Creed 1
Assassin's Creed 2
Grand Theft Auto 4
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Libery City
Oblivion
Saints Row 2
Prototype
Just Cause 2
Two Worlds 2
Mafia 2
Dead Rising 2
Darksiders
Divinity 2: Ego Draconis
Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening
Sacred 2: Fallen Angel
Red Faction: Guerilla
Arkania: Gothic 4
Burnout Paradise

There're probably some I'm missing as well as ones coming out like L.A. Noire and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood so I don't get where the whole "no good open world games" is coming from.

I imagine Microsoft using a propriety format based off HD-DVD for the 360's successor, the same for the 'Super Wii'

They could have been better, but I guess developers are also too lazy to fill 20 Gig space, let alone 8. (Juste Cause 2 is 4gig.. empty spaces everywhere). And I'm too lazy too look through the internet to find again the news where developpers were saying that they're having issues putting everything on one disc.
