Day one sales numbers pegged at just 40,000 units as Microsoft faces uphill battle in competitive smartphone sector

A report from TheStreet claims that on its first day of release Microsoft sold just 40,000 Windows Phone 7 units.

TheStreet adds that the number doesn’t account for the 89,000 free Windows Phone 7 devices that were handed out to Microsoft employees.

The numbers are thon into stark contrast when it’s considered that Microsoft has spent in the region of $440m marketing the device. In addition, last month Apple reported that it was selling 270,000 iPhones per day and Google 200,000 Android handsets.

Speaking to the site, mobile operator T-Mobile would not clarify exact numbers, though did add that Windows Phone 7 was “already receiving strong interest from our customers right out of the gate”.

Cote Collaborate analyst Michael Conte speculated that the arrival of so many WP7 devices at the same time may have confused consumers, adding: “Mondays aren't great launch days. They poured all that cash into it but they lost track of the fact that Fridays or Saturdays are the best launch days.”

He also cited some of the basic functions missing from the software at present, such as cut and paste.

However, it’s still very early days, as Nielsen’s Roger Entner points out: “It's early in the game. Not every product surges right out of the starting blocks. The first Android phone was not a big seller at T-Mobile.

“We'll see what happens with Black Friday sales. They'll probably cut prices like everyone else does. It's the nature of the beast. The only one that doesn't do promotions is Apple.”

A) This explains why Greenie tweeted via an Android Phone because he didn't get a Win7 Phone.

B) Like the guy said, it's early in the game and not every product surges out from the start. Like where was the big interest and hype? Certainly nothing on the level of iPhone.

It's a phone for professionals and dedicated gamers of course it won't be flying of the shelves like iphone. It probably won't conquer market but like PSP it can get good enough part of marketshare to stay in the game.

Google sold a 100.000 Android phones in its opening weekend as far as I know, so 40.000 phones in one day isn't bad at all, especially not considering how much competition there is now.

MIcrosoft screwed themselves by putting out terrible phones for ten years and coming into a market where Android has stormed to the top and iPhone is strong as ever. If they released 7 a year ago, it would have been much bigger news. At this point, they're entering what has become a crowded market, which is too bad because their new OS looks pretty fantastic. Unlike 6.5, which was a steaming pile of shit. Actually, so was 6... and 5... and 4...

They have a long uphill battle in front of them but before they even make a dent in the market, they need to stop playing catch-up. They've been behind at least one major competitor since they started making mobile OSes. First it was Palm, then Blackberry, then iPhone... now it's ALL of those companies AND Android.

Bada debut was better than iPhone (Samsung sold its millions of Wave devices faster than Apple) and this achievement was done with much less hype.

It's unfair to compare Apple's iphone with Android or WM7 phone sales...in a way.

First point is that only Apple sells the iphone and there is one "current" model.

WM7 and Android phones comes in many models from many different manufacturers.

They can be as many as 20 different Android and WM7 phones competing against the ONE iphone.

What matters is $$profit and the iphone makes Apple plenty of that.

Why should profit matter? We are not doing finance investements here, aren't we?
