Aside from the bad sarcasm, on every game site ive been on VGchartz is considered a joke amongst users. For example if i went on the IGN vestibule board and posted. "According to Vgchartz Black Ops sold 7 million copies Day 1" Most replies would consist of "LOL Vgchartz", theres no respect for it anyway from what ive seen except here and even that changes. Sites like Gamespot or IGN would never use Vgchartz as a source because they dont respect Vgchartz word for anything. The genreal consensus about this site is that, they make up the numbers. This sites been proven wrong several dozen times so theres a reason for their way of thinking. |
being proven wrong several dozen times when you put out the number of stats this site does doesn't really seem like a big percentage. The reason that NPD is assumed to be right all the time is that there isn't another professional tracking site in the US to compare them to. Famitsu and Media Create in Japan are able to get actual sales data from a much greater percentage of their market than NPD is able to get in the US and even they don't agree all the time.
Tracking sales when you don't get 100% of the data is always going to be a bit of a crap shoot but Brett does the best he can with what he has and is most of the time close or on the money. Fuck ups happen but they are the exception and not the rule.
You're probably right that your average internet user doesn't respect our site, but going to E3 I have to disagree with the idea that the average industry person doesn't. Maybe that's just the power of anonymity letting out people's inner feelings but I like to think that most rational people can see the numbers and this site for what it is and give it the respect it is due.
