Forums - General - Android now 2nd best-selling smartphone in the world

As per Gartner:

Q3 2010 Sales, by OS:

OS Units (in Thousands) Q3 2010 Mkt. Share Units (2009) Q3 2009 Mkt. Share
Symbian (Nokia) 29,480 36.6% 18,314 44.6%
Android 20,500 25.5% 1,424 3.5%
iOS (iPhone/Pad) 13,484 16.7% 7,040 17.1%
Research in Motion (BlackBerry) 11,908 14.8% 8,522 20.7%
Windows Mobile 2,247 2.8% 3,259 7.9%
Linux 1,697 2.1% 1,918 4.7%
Other 1,214 1.5% 612 1.5%

Pretty amazing stuff. Symbian and RIM's market share got totally destroyed during the quarter, losing 8% and 6% respectively. iOS held up pretty well, but is in 3rd place now.

Very interesting stuff. Android grew 100% from Q2 2010 - selling 10 million more units than last quarter. It has a good shot at beaing out Symbian for first place in Q4, or Q1 by latest.

I did a writeup about it on my blog if anyone is interested in charts and graphs of the OS wars... The market grew a whopping 20 million units from last quarter, and 96% year-over-year. Smartphones now control 19% of all mobile phone sales, worldwide.

Heh cool, I'm a bit of a fan of Android. It and Symbian are the two major open source ones aren't they?

How about a link to your blog?  I'd be interested in reading it.

Looking good Android! I am an Android fanboy when it comes to phone OS, as for my MP3's though, iOS all the way (for now...cmon' HTC Android based MP3).

Love my HTC Evo 4G, and won't be going to any other OS, period.

a bit off-topic, but is it worth getting an Android device even if it won't be officially updated (it's a 2.1, but Motorola apparently won't update ANY existing smartphone to 2.2 in Latin America)?

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

Good that the companies that insist on an open and more consumer and developer friendly market are leading.

I got a Droid 2 that came pre-installed with 2.2 and I couldn't really find anything that blew away my co-workers who still had 2.1.  Of course, they all got updates, recently (and I think my phone got an update a few days ago).  So I say go with the Android even if it's just 2.1.  You'll have a hard time spotting the upgrades--or at least I did.

Well Windows Phone 7 ought to raise the share a little from 2.8%. When you're that low its a lot easier to go up!

Tease.

I was about to say that, but it's still incredible how much the WM market share has dropped over the years though.

As long as its 2.1 or better, your good. I would note that you can root your phone to get the updates in unofficial areas as needed.

The biggest and most important changes were made from 1.5 to 1.6, then from 1.6 to 2.1. 2.2 is great (my phone got the upgrade a few days back), but its not something earth-shattering that would give you an inferior product if you couldn't have it.

The most important aspect, IMO, is to get a good phone...Regardless of the OS behind it. Anything around the 1ghz range like a Nexus One is going to run fast, and play most games.
