“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Well I'm gonna give a quick review from what time I've played it. I picked it up at midnight last night and I must say if you are used to the noob friendliness of MW2 you're going to be disappointed in this game. Therefore as of right now its better than MW2. Now I'm only commenting on the Multiplayer since I haven't touched the campaign yet but I will do so soon. Here are the things that set it apart from MW2 MP wise.

1. Recoil, Recoil, Recoil. Obviously I haven't tried every gun out, or even 1/2 the guns but out of the 5 or 6 guns I've used so far there is much more recoil. If it stays like this then gone are the days of shooting people from the across the map with ARs that are more accurate than a sniper rifle.

2. No more stopping power. This right here makes the game much more rounded and better. No stopping power therefore the other perks are worth that much more. You also feel the weight of the guns now so I'm finding myself using lightweight with the AR because it seems my guy runs that much slower than with a SMG. I never was a lightweight guy because I just felt guys moved fast enough in MW2, but in this game Treyarch has tried their best to make the perks worth something.

3. Better maps. I think I've played every map but 1 and I must say they are more balanced and there isn't one map I don't like. Nuketown is possibly my least favorite and it borders on not very good but still much better than MW2 when I hated half the maps from the start and learned to tolerate them.

The game just feels different. Way different than MW2. You can definately tell this is not Infinity Ward when you start playing this game. SMGs are useful now, ARs aren't as overpowered, and best of all NO QUICKSCOPING. I haven't tried the LMGs that much but this game just seems so much more balanced and put together. Graphically as good as MW2 IMO, possibly better.

From reading the review its clear Black Ops is continuing the theme of Multiplayer >>>>> Single player, which is a little disappointing. IGN put a lot of emphasis on the Wager Matches, which sound really interesting I'm just not sure how much I'd partake in them, alot seem free-for-all based which I've never been a big fan of on COD games.

Either way it seems IGN have at least learnt a little bit from their absurdly high rating of Modern Warfare 2, I wouldn't expect an 8.5 for Black Ops to truly represent nearly a full point drop off from MW2.

I'd disagree and give it a 9 at least.

The graphics are awesome. It's the exact same engine as MW2, but with (IMO) better and more varied locations and a lot more going on at one time. Yet they rate it .5 lower than MW2. Strange.

And lasting appeal of 9 for a CoD game is simply stupid. Call of Duty has the most popular Multiplayer of any game on the Xbox or PlayStation. Black Ops has the most customizable Multiplayer experience of all the CoD games. It has Zombies that MW doesn't have. It has Co-op Multiplayer. It has split-screen Online. Lasting Appeal is not possibly only a 9 for this game...

Gameplay is also strangely low. The controls are perfect. There are more new weapons for you to play with. More part of the game where you can drive vehicles. They gave MW2's Gameplay a 9.5... This is pretty much the same with more added on and they gave it an 8.

Sound - No complaints. Sountrack is the best I've heard in a CoD game since... Well.. Ever.

I think the big reviewers are mainly going to rate this badly for 2 reasons -

They see how much they overrated Modern Warfare 2

or

They simply have a boner for Infinity Ward/ Modern Warfare.

as of now, metacritic is 5 lower for ps3 and 4 lower for 360 (89 and 90 vs. 94 and 94)...but some person put a 70 on the ps3 version and said quotation forthcoming, and the same for the 360.  Otherwise, with the other two reviews, they are upper 90's.

any detail on the soundtrack?

It's just your usual Call of Duty soundtrack really. It's just got some gems like this in there at points -

And...

Just gives it the edge and makes it stand out over the other CoD games.

not bad.. was hoping for a bit of hendrix... and an essential for any war movie of this era: the doors, "the end"

Not completed it yet so there could still be more actual songs. And I might have missed some because I had it on really low volume for a couple of levels.

Just actually adding in real songs though gives it a boost though really.

deserves less, all cod games do. but if ign are cod fanboys fanboys then black ops deserves more.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

I'd agree with that. When your reading articles and listening to podcasts, you come to realise a few things, like the industries love for Harmonix, Rockstar Games and Infinity Ward. They rave about those companies so much, they hang out with the PR and developers from them and then when the time comes for a review, they're guaranteed 9's and 10's across the board. It's pretty shameful and it doesn't help that they're tricking gamers just because they have a special friendship with a few developers.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

Still wondering if the campaign is COOP?
