Forums - Nintendo - Chip-makers comments Strongly Suggest Wii 2 for 2011

Great. I just got a wii and it will be obsolete soon. But only a quad core processor? Seriously?

Hey, you should have got a Wii sooner :P

Anyway, what difference does it make? You still have plenty of great games on the Wii to get, with plenty to stil come out!

It's a rumour, nothing more, and it probably isn't for the Wii2 at any rate.

Anyway, I'd imagine (as the person above me rightly said) that Quad-core is more than enough. We ned to se screens first though. Also, people, don't worry about Skyward Sword. It WILL be a Wii-exclusive, I asure you...

It makes a big difference. I had hopes for some good future games on wii but if there is a new nintendo system in a year, there won't be any new games on wii. :/

But honestly, what are those good games on wii? If it is not too much trouble, I would appreciate a pm with suggestions (from anyone and a pm because it is way offtopic). ;P I think I could use some right now. I already have smg,mp3,zelda,nmh,little kings story, madworld and wsr. Brawl is still not delivered but should arrive very shortly.

In a large sense, the Wii has been losing luster on the software front for ages.  It's turned into the N64 where all the quality games are made by Nintendo and almost no one else.  When the N64 reached that level, it might as well no have existed compared to the original Playstation.  The Xbox360 and PS3 also have substantial power under their hoods to keep the fight going for a few more years.  Even after five years on the market, PC games have hardly advanced at all (technically) over the Xbox360 or PS3.  The difference is so small as to be negligable.  The Wii, on the other hand, looks increasingly dated and it no longer even has the perceived technical edge with motion control.

I work at Best Buy and the Move and Kinect are performing extremely well.  Hell, Kinect--kinda fun.  I saw three Xbox's walk out the door with Kinect in tow in a 20 minute span on a Friday afternoon.  The Wii is no longer unique, and it's no longer cutting edge.  Looking at the sales numbers on this very site, the Wii is losing it's market dominance (ever so slightly) over MS and Sony.  Where it often hovered around 49% of the console market share for the past couple years, I noticed today that it's dropped to 47%, and moving into the holiday season with Move and Kinect vying for shelf space, I would't be surprised to see the Wii's market share drop to 45% by the turn of the year.

Yeah, you're right, the Wii was carried strongly by a single game for a very long time.  It needs a helluva lot more than that now.  Wii Sports is not unique anymore, and Kinect, at least, is doing motion gaming in a much more unique and--where perception is concerned--advanced manner than Sony or Nintendo.

Nintendo will need to upgrade to maintain their momentum.  I've been saying it since E3--and was scoffed at repeatedly.  I'm not saying that 2011 is when the next system will hit, but I wouldn't be surprised to see an announcement at E3 2011.  If anything, while the Xbox360 and PS3 are likely going to be maintaining their steam through the end of 2011, the Wii certainly won't.  But, the 3DS will be holding Nintendo at the top.

The way I see it:  The Xbox 360 and PS3 will maintain their current (sales) levels, give or take, through 2012--especially if Move and Kinect continue adding strength to the machines.  But the Wii will be fading fast.  Nintendo will focus most of their attention on the 3DS, so we really won't be paying attention to the Wii (as if many of us are now anyway).  Late 2012, the successor to the Wii will launch.  And it will be drastically different from the Wii--as in, it won't be something as simple as "Wii HD."  Hell, the PS3 is now the "Wii HD."  Frankly, I don't think the 3DS is that much of a leap in design over the DS line.  It adds some graphical bells and whistles, and some of the tech of the Wii with motion sensors, but other than that--it doesn't change up anything very much.  The successor to the Wii, however, I believe will be a drastic change.  It'll be technically powerful, maintain motion control in a much more streamlined manner, and will likely feature some new wackiness we can't really fathom.

If the 3DS isn't as strong as Nintendo hopes and if the Wii fades faster than expected, the new system could come at the end of 2011.

May not be true, but it looks fairly logical.  And again, Kinect is pretty cool.  I'm probably going to up and buy the thing pretty soon.

It is not strong... It is a beast, 3DS is and it will sell tons and you will see it first hand... The wii gathering dust, nobody uses it talk is very annoying,  I do use my wii almost every day, and so a lot of my friends do... There are a lot of good game already out and another lot of upcoming games, Xenoblade, last story, Zelda, DK, epic mickey, sonic Colors, GE, mariosports mix to name some of them, the graphics thing is something already Known, I do have a PC with an i7 and and Nvidia geforce gtx 460,
So I know good graphics are somehow important, the games are very beatiful Ill take that, but when it come to fun (Yes games are meant to be fun), I would change my wii at all...  I know that´s just my opinion, but dont take as a fact that the wii is dead, nor than the 3ds will fail, we may see a new wii maybe in 2012, but not sooner IMO...

I barely use my Wii.  If it wasn't for Kirby's Epic Yarn, it'd have stayed off since Other M left that foul odor in it until Cthulhu knows when.  Still pisses me off how bad that game sucked.  I'm likely going to snag Goldeneye because it looks pretty good and is getting strong reviews.

I'm not saying the Wii is dead, but it's barely floating.  It's doing slightly better than the N64 during this period, but damn if it ain't depressing.  There are too few high quality titles being made.  Meanwhile, my Xbox360 is running non-stop--as is my girlfriend's Xbox360, because there's just too much great stuff on there.

I think the 3DS will be successful, but with it's ridiculous price tag, it's going to have a hard time being "regular DS successful."

Eh, different strokes.  This year I've played my Wii more than any other system, more than my 360 and DS combined even probably if you factor in DD games.

Though I'd also say N64 actually had a pretty great year 4 (Majora's Mask, Paper Mario, Ogre Battle 64, Kirby 64, RE2, Perfect Dark, Sin & Punishment, Excitebike 64, Banjo-Tooie, Hydrothunder, Rush 2049, MegaMan 64, Battle for Naboo, TWINE, No Mercy, etc, etc).

I've been saying the follow-up to the Wii probably coming or to be announced in 2011 since E3.

With Kinect and Move both launching successfully, the Wii is very quickly going to lose what remains of it's luster.  Kinect is pretty rad so far.  I have to admit it.

It's a matter of software to make Wii lose its luster though, and from the general buzz on the street, the real killer app so far is Dance Central, though it remains to be seen how far that will carry them (and nothing negative is meant out of that. One game pretty much made the Wii into a phenomenon early on as well, so who knows?)

why do you care about people who say that Wii gathers dust? i play my Wii more than i do my 360 lol i haven't played it since GOW3 and wont play it until dead space 2 and portal 2 comes out. just ignore them Wii is doomed any way as it has always been and so will 3DS and the next Nintendo home console and it will be called casual and kiddy and will only sell Nintendo games and everything bad and then will get copied ;)

so just enjoy the games and laugh at the people talking shit :)

ha,ha,..Patcher was off by One year but still close to a 2010 launch.....    to much rumors floating around and where there is too many rumors there's somthing cooking somewhere..

Over and over again, i say 2011 E3 announcement , fall release (sept/nov) 2011..  I can't wait to see Mario's mustash in HD glory..

NINTENDO will make a shit load of money again because like me, people want to play their most favorite characters in 1080P ..    not only a visual upgrade but an upgrade leap in phisics ... ( A- Mario game with better visuals and better phisics than LittleBigPlanet and Banjo Kazooi (Nuts and Bolts) will be epic.

I did a little digging into what Marvell is actually producing and the products they have demos for seem like an odd match for a game console. But that doesn't mean that they couldn't produce the CPU for Nintendo's next console; after all, Nintendo has never used an "off the shelf" CPU on any console, and if they decided to use a Marvell based CPU I would bet that it would be heavily modified.

With that said, I wouldn't be that surprised to see a new entry into the console buisness at this point in time ... While it would be unexpected and unusual, a company could create an android based home console and try to encourage small developers to produce games for them that were digitally distributed.

A cheap to manufacture console for NINTENDO would be a Quad core cpu with a 2gb dedicate GPU, and most importantly (to all next gen console) system RAAAAM ! ...stop being cheap and lets add ram memory to these systems...   look at the Xbox 360 and the PS3 they both choking for the lack of system ram.

So Nintendo, make somthing decent, Quad core Cpu with a 2gb Gpu and at least add 4 gb of system ram, Thats all I need for the next 5 or 8 years to come.

When you just write someone off as just "talking shit," you're attempting to diminish their points, and the only reason to do that is that you don't like what is being said because you realize it might be true.

I was flat-out wrong about this generation, where the "games" are concerned.  I thought the Wii was going to be the greatest thing ever.  But consumers didn't understand it, Nintendo fans didn't actually want anything truly different--as was the intent of both the Wii and DS(noted by the numbers of Wii owners who hated "different" franchise titles like modified Call of Duty titles or a different take on Dead Space, and the different, though still amazing, GTA: Chinatown Wars), and because the consumers weren't there, 3rd party companies abandoned the system en masse where hardcore titles are concerned.

I mocked the Xbox360's ridiculous failure rate, but it's all I play now.  It's a truly fantastic system, despite it's initial falling on it's own face, and has the most comfortable controller I've ever held--finally usurping the GameCube controller.  The games are addictive and impressive, and the Achievement's simply maximize that addictive nature.  Where the hell is the Wii's Achievement system?  I think it's safe to say that if the 3DS doesn't have something like the Achievement/Trophy systems of the HD machines, then it's safe to say that Nintendo no longer "gets" gamers.  Seriously, who doesn't love unlocking these things?

The Wii had some great games--thing is, they're the ones I see many people on here just hating.  "MadWorld sucks because it's just a 6-hour game."  "Chinatown Wars sucks because it isn't exactly like GTA: Vice City."  "Dead Space Extraction sucks because it isn't exactly like the HD Dead Space games."  "Hardcore games will sell, and we'll buy them, but only if they're great."  These are just really pathetic excuses for skipping some good games.

Not that I mean to dump on the Nintendo fans, but too much of this attitude being delivered has also worked to drive me further from my Nintendo fandom.  And I fucking love Nintendo.  I want to gough the eyes out of the next jackass that tries to tell me that "there's a market for FPS titles on the Wii, so why don't they make FPS games?"  If there was truly a market for FPS titles on the Wii, even a mediocre title like The Conduit would have sold nearly a million copies.  As is, Haze, a markedly worse FPS title sold twice as much on a system with half the installed base, and why?  Because there's a market for FPS titles on the PS3!  Goldeneye is starting pretty well so far--but that's pretty well for an FPS on Wii.  Compared to how high-profile FPS titles leap from the gates on other systems?  It's still really low.

Anyway...

By the way, when I referenced strength for the 3DS, I meant in sales.  Not it's power under the hood.  It's power under the hood won't be bad, but it'll still be something between the power of the GameCube and Wii.  We shouldn't focus on the raw power of the 3DS, even if it is impressive, because that's just going to lead to disappointment when the ultra-powerful PSP2 launches half a year later.
