Forums - Sony - IGN Orange Box Review: 8.4

Orange Box is great...you should pick it up regardless. I know you want to "teach EA a lesson" and everything...but you're only going to make them move even more support towards 360 and Wii by not buying the PS3 Orange Box. It's a great game, you shouldn't miss out on it because of some framerate problems, that's just silly.

If they make me a patch I'll consider it :P It's a double edged sword, if we don't support it, they may lose interest, (which is unlikely considering the userbase is growing), or we do support it, and show EA that we don't mind buying there sh*t-tastic ports. Given the choice between the two I'd say were safer just blowing off there half ass material.

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

Thanks ben. I guess i'm gonna buy it, it was just a bit dissappointing. But you actually convinced me to buy it.

F.E.A.R. port was fine if you only played PS3 version.  I enjoyed the game and beat it on the PS3.

As for Orange Box on PS3...look at the review score...it's still good.

Only Ep.2 seems to have "major" issues so I don't think it's worth avoiding.  That said, I'd need keyboard/mouse support on PS3 (like UT3 has) because otherwise it's not worth it to buy, at least if I want to play TF2.

Anyway, if you can only play it on PS3, just get it.  The score shows its still a great game and you shouldn't miss out on Portal at the very least.

Game Daily review:  "Obviously, the less experience you have with Half-Life 2, the more you'll enjoy The Orange Box. For veterans, the original and Episode One hold little value. But if you never played or finished those games, this is a must buy. Obviously, if you own an Xbox 360, you deserve to play that version over this one. Then again, if you don't and have never seen the game running on anything but a PS3, then you won't know what you're missing."

They gave it an 80 for PS3.  Just get it.

Winbane, just get a FragFX, they are only $60. I am considering purchasing one for UT3, just because the playstation controllers are HORRIBLE for any FPS!!! Bah.

It seems to me that the team that ported the Orange Box to PS3 didn't do a good job of optimizing the Source engine for PS3. The line you quoted from the review basically implies that there are issues in HL2 and Episode One but they are more infrequent. The newer games like Portal, TF2, and Episode 2 have much more frequent problems. I am guessing since the older games don't push the Source engine as much the problems rarely present themselves.

Oh I'm not saying they did a great job, just that it's not as bad as OMG A THREE YEAR OLD GAME CANT EVEN RUN.

My only gripe is that they got it to work just fine on the 360 and PC :P, I say if Insomniac can get Ratchet and Clank futures to run damn near flawlessly, with high res textures, 60 FPS, in 720p with thousands of things going on screen at a time, using an "updated" verion of thier first engine ever created on the PS3 then what problems could Valve or (uber computor god's) be having here? Gabe just really doesn't like the PS3 is what I'm gathering from it all lol. And if he does't want to bless me with goodies then I can take my $60 elsewhere :D

Getting a PC game to run on 360 is just imminently easier to do on 360. Like the PC, the 360 uses a DirectX enviornment. Not only that MS much better development tools than Sony. More over, MS specific tools designed to bring PC code over the 360. Before a developer can get a PC game running on PS3 they have to move its engine from a Direct X to an OpenGL enviroment. Can it be done? Certainly, it just takes extra effort . The PS3 being in third place causes most third parties to think its not worth it to go that extra mile.

Oh I certainly understand that it's much harder to do than port it to the 360, but what I'm saying, is if a company like Insomniac (2nd party), can get an update of the first engine they made within a year, what is Valve or EA for that matter trying to say? Valve as a company is supposed to be exploding from the brim with technological geniuses, and EA could could easily put down some money to learn the tech considering they like to spam there games to all platforms. For a company like Insomniac to do what it did is un-thinkable, I know they only have to worry about one platform, but they've made an INSANE jump in just one year. EA used to suck, still sucks, and I'm not sure when there going to get better lol.

I just don't see how a company like Insomniac or the guys that did Call of Duty 4 can outclass EA's money or Valve's "expertise"

[Edit] BTW I agree with your statement that the PS3 is in last place, but honestly not worth the effort? Maybe when the console was about a million units world wide >_>; it's got a considerable audience for its games, and considering cost of production you'd think they would want to capitalize on that market, hell if PS3 was really struggling for games, woulden't you want to be the company to make bank supplying them? (Ubisoft on the Wii's opening few months, COD4 on the PS3)

You can't compare a second party like Insomniac to a third party. Insomniac only devs for the PS consoles as such they build their engines for PS hardware from the ground up. If it were up to Valve, the Orange Box wouldn't be on the PS3 at all. EA the publisher made the decision to bring the game to PS3 owners. Valve's dislike for the PS3 is well known. Gabe Newell actually said developing for PS3 a waste of time. If anything PS3 owners should be upset at Valve and not EA for the how the Orange Box came out. If it weren't for EA, PS3 owners would have to get the PC or 360 version of the game or not play it all together.

Yes third parties don't think its worth the effort. One can simply look at the Gamecube to see that. The Gamecube was easy and cheap to develop for and its userbase was near equal to the X-box, yet it was riddled with poorly down 3rd hand ports. By third hand, I mean developers would down port a game from X-box to PS2, then take the PS2 build and port it to the Gamecube. The PS3 is similar but worse boat. The PS3 is more difficult and expensive to develop for than both of its competitors in addition to being a third place console. If developers wouldn't take the time to give the GC decent ports what makes you think they will view the PS3 any different when it has even more of the deck stacked against it?

UT3 supports keyboard/mouse, but what is the fragfx?  (side note:  I don't think the sixaxis is horrible for fps, but i guess some people dislike it compared to 360 setup)

I still think microsoft owns EA secretly and releasing inferioir ps3 games to throw of sales.

mM
