Forums - Microsoft - Ubisoft - Microsoft not making enough Kinects to satisfy demand

Microsoft can't make enough Kinect units to satisfy demand this Christmas, according to Tony Key, Ubisoft's SVP sales and marketing.

He told IndustryGamers: "We're supporting this system in a big way. We believe in it, and to be blunt about it, depending on how fast Microsoft can make these units and replenish these units, we believe that the Kinect is going to be hard to get.

"It's going to be sold out a lot this holiday season. We try to project how many units of the hardware will be in the marketplace. We know how many they're making. We know how many they're telling us they're making.

"What we don't know is the demand for that. We believe they're not making enough to satisfy demand, not by their own choice, because they're making them as fast as they can. We're optimistic that the attach rate of Kinect will be really good to the launch titles because the machine, the hardware, is cool, and that it will be selling out a lot."

ofcourse, with ms giving out kinects to associations and to burger king, to oprah, theiy are going to need to produce more. and ofcourse those give aways will cause more demand, which will lead to more production.

when something has a 500 million marketing budget were 90% of it is in the us, their are ofcourse going to be more demands.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

This is going to be the trend then. Wii was, is and will always be doomed, and Kinect is "supported in a big way" and "selling out" and is "going to be hard to get"

The way and timing that third parties changed their attitude towards motion controls is making me frustrated. They're so blatantly obvious.

Notice something he said in the article: 'attach ratio'

While the wii is doing great, what is the attach ration for 3p games? Very low. Wii owners buy mostly Nintendo games.

While Microsoft does have a couple of games on the horizon, the future of kinect does not rely on Microsoft Studios making a bunch of tremendous games. Basically, Ubisoft is trying to get their foot in the door as quick as possible to be seen as the top 3p Kinect software publisher. Does anybody even care who the top 3p Wii publisher is?

it didn't even have half a million preorders lol

Keep in mind UbiSoft was the biggest supporter of Wii at launch. UbiSoft was like the only publisher other then Sega to really believe in the Wii and Nintendo. So don't hate on UbiSoft they might not have made any killer games for the Wii but at least they had faith when EA and others did not.

But you have to remember that things like KINECT aren't the kind of products to have a ton of pre-orders.

True that, VGC had a lot of hype-threads about how Kinect has immense amount of pre-orders and is sold out everywhere.

It's gonna do just fine in the end though with that 500m marketing budget and good reviews.

Then why were they saying it was sold out everywhere? This just seems like more smoke and mirrors to me
