Basically, what I want to have by the end of this is a point value system that can be reliably used to determine balance.

For example, every role or role section will be worth a certain amount of points, and each player in the game adds to a point level cap.

I have heard the Werewolf version of this game already has a point system made for it.  It has different roles (like, instead of a doctor there might be a person with a "stop mafia kill" one use ability) but it should be somewhat transferable.  Unfortunately I do not know this system or where to find it.

Also, did you make this stuff up or did you get it somewhere?  If the latter, credit is due.

Nope, it's all straight from my noodle.

It just makes sense when you get down to the basics. Everything causes disturbance in the balance. It's just a matter of figuring out by how much. That's where you guys come in to help. :P

good thread ! will help a lot of peeps looking to make mafia games

Because of the 1 mafia in 3 townies rule, I would think Mafia are worth 3 points while normal townies are worth 1.

So...

Normal goon: 3 points

goon with some sort of power: 4 points

Vanilla townies: 1 point

Cop/Doctor/similar townie role: 2 points

Role with limited use: .5 for either mafia or town.

In a game of 15 people, with their being 5 mafia goons, one cop and one doctor, the points would be 15 mafia and 12 town.

Too make it more even, then the mod can add in a tracker and a lie detector.

Then it would be 15:14. With the two extra roles being worth two points.

^^ That ratio isn't too unbalanced.

After the little problem we had in the ongoing game I thought we should have a clear set of rules that are posted in the OP of every thread.

These are the basic rules that I used when I modded a game on a different forum... Any rule can be changed at the discretion of the mod but these cover the basics....

1.I am the mod. What I say goes, no exceptions. If you have any problems with something I said don’t mention it in the thread, PM me

2. The game is a day-start.

3. Day lasts for 2 weeks. Twilight lasts from lynch vote to when I post the death scene.

4. Night lasts for 72 hours. If you don’t get your night action in during the time then they will be randomized

5. All votes must be bold. Unvotes are not required but help a lot.

6. A lynch majority is equivalent to the number of living players divided by two, rounded up by one if necessary.

7. No quoting PMs, or any other form of private communication you may have.

8. No cryptography, small text, etc.

9. Don't be a jackass.

10. If a rule isn't on here that should be on here, inform me about it. If you exploit the supposed loophole, you will be mod killed (so behave)

11. Bah posts are allowed, but don't get excessive or something worse than death will happen to you...

12. Violation of any of these rules is punishable by lots of things. I would prefer you don't force me to demonstrate what measures I could take...

13. Remember, this is a game. Don't forget to have fun!

14. Rule 1 supersedes all other rules

15. You may not edit or delete your posts. Getting caught merits severe punishment.

16. No ratting out your mafia team(Not to be confused with bussing)

17. The flavor is just there for your enjoyment. So don't think too much about it

Sig thanks to Saber! :D

I think that list is needlessly complicated, dsister.  KISS is critical for the sorts of numbskulls who put the games at the most risk of going off the rails like that.

I take away two main lessons from Game 22.

ONE:  We need to make it more extravagantly clear how unacceptable PM quoting is, since several people clearly didn't get the memo.  Punishment should be severe, with modly discretion for truly dire consequences should circumstances warrant extraordinary measures.

TWO:  (And this is my opinion)  We need a break from flavored games; they are OK for people who already know basic mafia play but it is clearly destroying the minds of new players, whether they blurt out their entire role PM, or think role-name gamesmanship is the #1 strategy to use, or simply think incredible power roles are completely ordinary for townsfolk and don't believe a no-powered townie is a credible role for someone to claim.

In short, we need vanilla mafia back.  AT LEAST one or two games.

P.S.  It is also my opinion that deadlines just encourage people to run out the clock.  "Two weeks?  Plenty of time, I won't even bother posting for the first week."  Although my game has had its ... problems ... I think the pacing was OK, or at least it didn't take two whole weeks per day.  If a day does get ridiculously long, I think an ad hoc method should be applied where the mod makes a judgment call and sets a deadline any reasonable player should be able to check in and not get blindsided by ... I'd say 48-72 hours.  If you can't at least glance in the thread every 3 days, you should not be playing.

P.P.S.  It should also be made even more ABUNDANTLY CLEAR in the sign up thread that signing up is a commitment and give an idea of the expectations of a player and how devastating it is to a game to be modkilling people left and right due to them not being bothered to actually play the game they signed up for.  Substitutes such as c03n3nj0 in Game 22 are better than nothing but frankly not by much, since they are totally different people (hurting anyone trying to get a read) and they have to read hundreds and hundreds of posts in a short time when called upon and they don't have whatever relationships naturally form over the course of the game.

If we scare away some fainthearts, at this point I prefer that fate to having to modkill one or two new players every goddamned game because they get bored or never even play to begin with.  I know that sometimes things just happen and I trust that that's the case with noname, and for all I know gurgles, but honestly something has to be done to at least prevent what is preventable.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

To expand on ONE, in my opinion we should consider a four tier system of consequences:

1.  Mod Warning -- obviously mod has total discretion on how dire his reprimands and/or threats should sound

2.  Modkilled for the game

3.  Modkilled for the game AND the next game; next game's mod has to agree sufficiently to respect the call.

4.  Modkilled for the game AND the next game AND it is put to the VGC Mafia playing community that they should be banned from X number of games or forever; we all hash it out after the game ends in the game thread or in a new thread or whatever and the community hands down its punishment.

I wouldn't say any of the guys I banned deserve number four but it should be out there waiting for someone to deserve it.  And IMO it wouldn't be right to inflict #3 retroactively.

But the thing is is that with posting all the rules I posted it just clears away any risk of the players doing it. You can try to make it clearer even taking out some (#2, 11, 12, 14,). But these just make it so people don't even try to risk it, they know exactly what is permitted and what is banned.
