Forums - Nintendo - Ready at Dawn: "The Wii Novelty is wearing off"

oniyide said:

@metallicube  while I agree that if you dont like whatever you should get rid of it, by why take it so personally??? its just games, some people think Wii sucks thats there opinion, you might think PS3 sucks and has "no games" but im not gonna fly off the handle, or "RROD" I havent seen alot xbox fans fly off the handle for that. You can bring up software sales all you want that doesnt account for everyone's taste and what they play and if you take into account there are more top selling HD games than their are Wii ones I think they might even themselves out.

Who says I take it personally? I'm merely saying what I think is the underlying motives behind people going on about "collecting dust."

As for the bold: Where exactly do you get that information? Have you ever checked the software charts on this very site? Wii not only has far more million sellers than the PS3 (and is nearing 360 in that category), but it also has a several 10 million sellers, which PS3 has yet to accomplish, and even the software selling machine, the 360, which came out in 2005, only has a few.

Guess what, The HD graphics novelty have worn off too...

Hell yeah. It's shown to be eye candy, and that's it. Okay, expensive and time consuming eye candy, and that can even get in the way of content (FFXIII not having any towns).

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

The motion novelty has worn off, nintendo themselves barely use it anymore

Hmm, I guess Sony and MS are in trouble then, since they're banking on that worn out novelty for the future of their consoles.

Motion controls are not a novelty, they are another step in game control. It's like saying rumble or analouge sticks are novelties. Just because most developers (including Nintendo themselves at times) haven't implemented it well yet doesn't mean they never will. It's simply still in its infancy so it is often done poorly and uninspired.

Anyways, in response to the original post: believe it or not, I don't play the Wii much either these days, but in all fairness I don't play my Xbox 360 much either, besides the occasional Gears. I have Assassin's Creed 2 and Dead Rising 2 both on standby and I have very little desire to play them. Even my most anticipated 360 game this year, Fallout New Vegas isn't motivating me enough to buy it yet. I guess console gaming is just not doing it for me much these days, especially the single player games. Nowadays I mostly play online multiplayer, and the single player games I play are either retro or on PC (Starcraft, Diablo II, Minecraft, etc).

Yeah they are, because they invested in a flash in the pan novelty that the creator barely supports

I don't think you can really prove the motion novelty has worn off. You could easily argue motion gaming is bigger than ever.

NIntendo is using motion technology as much as they always did. I can't think of any Nintendo Wii games that doesen't take advantage of  the motion technology.

As usual you're spewing nonsense I say. Nonsense!

Well kinect and move will likely spur some interest in it before they too collapse from lack of interest. As for nintendo. mario, donkey kong, kirby all use it to a small extent. Only zelda is really utilizing it in any big way.

So the only proof for your argument required you to cherry pick three platformers. Those games actually require the Wiimote by the way. They also put out several games this year that use motion controls in a significant way. The console is even bundled with motion games.

In a nutshell, its stupid to say Nintendo is barely using motion technology.

which ones? I don't remember.

Back to that old collecting dust myth?

It's funny because so many different people have said the *exact* same thing. It can't be a total myth...

And the "many people" you refer to are all on gaming message boards, which means they are 99% hardcore gamers, and this is a group that generally doesn't get along with the Wii. But this demographic is a small representation of the total people who play games. There are just the only ones you ever hear from since they are the only ones who frequent gaming message boards. There are probably plenty of people out there who play the Wii every day but don't exactly frequent message boards.

This skewed representation can also be seen in the reception of games lke Carnival games, Wii Fit, and Wii Sports. These are all games that have sold phenomenaly well, yet if you read the reviews and the general consencous among gaming journalists and message boards online, you would think these games were miserable games that bombed hard.

@metallicube  true their are some people who troll who just like to throw around "my Wii is collecting dust", just like some throw around "PS3 has no games" and "RROD" to just be jerks, but lets not act like its all crap, you cant honestly think that no one has gotten tired of the Wii or any console for that matter and simple has not played as much as before or not at all. Me personally, i fall in the "dont play that much" category and I know for a fact I have friends who simply dont play it anymore. When im talking software, there are more HD games up in the top sellers than there are Wii games. I didnt say that any one HD game outsells any one Wii game

Well think what you want, but I think it's pretty illogical to assume that something with potential as motion control will be completely dropped in the future of gaming. It's an obvious improvement and next step in intuitive gameplay. Not saying that all gamers will be dancing in the street for motion gaming and every single game will use it, but I think it's pretty obvious at this point that motion controls are here to stay - at least to some degree.

@metallicube  disregard my last sentence upon closer inspection its not really fair to pit two consoles against one, even though the install base for Wii is much higher than either. and upon even closer inspection Wii has 19 games in the top 100 with 360 having 20 and PS3 having 23, not that much of difference IMO to really matter.

honestly nintendo is making a big mistake releasig 3ds when ds sales are through the roof.they willl kill the sales of ds for no reason. they should release Wii 2 instead.

I see your point, but I never like to fault a company for NOT resting on its Laurels.

I honestly think Nintendo's console business is in a bad place. They struck gold with the Wii, I just don't see them doing it again. I think Nintendo needs to merge with or Sony, and maintain 100% control over the handhelds side, and have a large stake in the PS4....

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

I don't know if that last bit is sarcasm, but if it's not, I approve.  Sony Ninty would be nuts lol.
