Forums - General - Are the "hit" songs bad and annoying or am I getting old?

Turn on any radio station playing the so called hit songs. Many of them have some form of rapping chorus.

The singer, the music and the chorus, I find them headache inducing.

They don't even have a good voice. And the rapping, oh my, it's like a someone speaking English as foreign language with the tone pretty much flat.

Am I getting too old?

Yes.

You're not getting old, much of the music on the radio these days seems pretty generic, to me too at least. Not all of it, but more and more none the less.

Am I getting too old?

Yes.

Trust me, it happens to us all. I remember my parents saying exactly the same thing in the 80s. And their parents told them the same thing in the 50s and 60s. Pop music all sounds the same, and it doesn't sound like something the older peeps think is good.

Welcome to being old.

Don't worry, we all do it.

But I like older music that's 1 gen before me. That means I am a senior now :)

Indeed. We quite literally have seen it all, and listened to it all, before. But, for those whippersnappers (which we were not so long ago, falling for the same tricks), it's the first time around so feels fresh and new. Pop is just a happy recycling for the kids and the nostalgic.

Yes, I know, a massive simplification, but it suffices to make my point.

But yeah, I know this whole thing about old, boring folks nagging on new stuff is a part of the cycle of life, it's always entertaining though.

It's not you. I was really into the music scene a few years ago, all my friends played in bands and we'd go to concerts every weekend. Back then, the underground scene was growing and some of them even hit mainstream and we all thought that the radio would go back to how it was in the early 90's. Some bands made it through like The Wombats, Parkway Drive, Love of Diagrams and so on. The UK was still going strong, but then Australia started to die out, even the popular 'good' bands started to lose popularity like Eskimo Joe, The Sleepy Jacksons, Evermore. Pop made a huge resurgence, the club scene crew stronger and that saw the rise of the Pop horrors like Kesha, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry (Jesus fuckin christ she's hot) and the rest (Miley, Bieber, generic pop singer No. 23). The rap and r'n'b groups caught on really quickly and adapted to the change, a few rock bands tried and failed miserably (Good Charlotte).

Music popularity changes all the time, I wouldn't be surprised if Gaga's career becomes a drugged up painted corpse in the next few years and an older genre makes a come back (hopefully the blues or psychedelic rock).

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

Nah, it doesn't mean you're getting old, it means you know better.

I listen to a lot of stuff (prog, blues, jazz, metal, pop) and most of today's mainstream music is trash, pointless lyrics, talentless singers (except lady gaga, she's an amazing singer, but she's also a special phenomenon).

And that's mainly because of the way the music industry works, they don't want musicians with talent and visions, because they can't control them, when you have someone like Justin Bieber, who sings well, but nothing outside of this... he's a tool for the industry, they'll use him and throw him in the trash, because they want to be the ones who constantly control what pepole hear, a label company wouldn't like a top selling musician signing with another label.

And that's why lady gaga's different, she worked her ass off and cracked the system, she isn't a tool made by the music companies, and I hope that she'll make more varied music now that she has a wide and enthusiastic audience.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.
