Forums - General - NFL lockout could happen next year

To be honest, I don't know if I care at this point. Not after Sunday. The Broncos are shameful. 59-14... And against Oakland too. A season off would spare us some more humiliation.

The pension is $200 a month for each Season played in the NFL.

Averege NFL Career length is 3 and a half seasons.

So... $800 a month for the average player to be generous.   Or $9,600 a year.  Starting at age 55.

Granted their conditions aren't going to be bad as your 10 season guys... but even a 10 season guy is only getting 24,000 a year... and probably has some serious day to day pain and or mental impairments.

Thats ridiculously low.  I've read studies of football players having much higher rates of alzheimer's, so that with the obvious physical problems that these guys have they do deserve to get reimbursed for their efforts.

Its hard to believe that a warrior like Brett Favre can play 20 seasons and only get $40,000 a year for all the pain and suffering he's going to have for it.

but who gives a rip if Farve has a pension. He makes millions every year. It is called not being an idiot and saving for your own retirement. Pretty much every football player could have millions in the bank if they didn't decide to live lavishly. They could still be comparatively living it rich while saving for the future.

The pension argument is stupid if they already have a minimum payment in place for their players. Here are the supposed minimum salaries for 2007

Rookies - $285,000
One Year Veteran - $360,000
Two Year Veteran - $435,000
Three Year Veteran - $510,000
Four to Six Year Veteran - $595,000
Seven to Nine Year Veteran - $720,000
Ten Year Veteran - $820,000

Honestly, I really don't care about this stupid lockout. If there is no football next year they'll probably lose a lot of happy fans like the NHL did with their last lockout.

Agreed.  I was gonna point the pension thing out with Favre lol.  They must have forgotten about his actual contract.  Guy probably has 150 million in the bank lol.  He drives a beat up pickup truck to games.  Honestly, I don't know if they would lose to many fans.  Most of them would come right back.

The NHL  has actually recovered quite well since the lock-out. It was definitely worth it. Unlike the NFL, NHL players were in a strong position of power where idiot GM's would spend more than the team could afford. Teams that were supposed to be making money ... weren't.

I remember  back in the day when the Colorado Avalanche power player unit was more expensive than the Canucks whole roster!

The fact that NFL players do not have guaranteed contracts, and that their base salary is significantly lower than the minimum NHL salary is crazy ( though there is a big difference in the size of each team)! How the owners get so much more of the pie than the players is ridiculous.

I think this will definitely damage the owners fan relationship. The players definitely deserve much much more.

I would only care if they had no idea what they were getting into. They do.

With the kind of money they make while they play the game, they can setup something so they can take care of themselves.

The base pay is 310K. If you can't find a way to make that work for you, I don't know what to tell ya. There are many jobs in the world with more danger and less pay.

They can deal with it.

Not sure that's true.

While there is little chance of actual death, you are basically being paid specifically to harm yourself versus "more dangerous jobs" being the possibility of harm.

Average Life Expectancy for an NFL player appears to be about 50-58 (Granted, making the pension issue, kinda pointless unless it passes on to spouses.)

Once again, the average NFL player only plays 3 1/2 years.  That's enough to lower life expectancy by like 20 years.  Higher when you consider the fact that people who die as children and of young illnesses and the like are included in average life expectancy but not in the average NFLers life expectancy.

@OP:

Actually I'm so fed up of TV journalist endlessly blathering about football (soccer for handegg lovers ) and seeing them far more than actual matches, that having the whole Europe football-free for a whole year would be a blessing for me. Not to mention all those brain-dead hooligans, I'd reserve a playing day for them and provide each of them a machine gun and plenty of ammo when they enter stadia, keep the police away (why risk their lifes to prevent subhumans from getting what they are looking for) and let them solve their own problem by themselves once and for all without bothering police and common people that couldn't care less about their miserable lifes.

Exactly. THey can't save when they are making bank? They should be better with their money and not try to blow it all on stupid cars and big houses. How much does it cost to go to a football game? How much is a licensed nf l jersey or shirt etc? How much do consumers have to pay for NFL ticket just so they can watch al;l the games? The NFL needs to start thinking of its fans (customers) a little better.

How many of those are performance enhancing drug related? How many of those were people who died outside of football?

The average football player does not live the average lifestyle either. It's hard to equate the death rate with strictly the dangers of playing the game.
