While there is little chance of actual death, you are basically being paid specifically to harm yourself versus "more dangerous jobs" being the possibility of harm.

Average Life Expectancy for an NFL player appears to be about 50-58 (Granted, making the pension issue, kinda pointless unless it passes on to spouses.)

Once again, the average NFL player only plays 3 1/2 years.  That's enough to lower life expectancy by like 20 years.  Higher when you consider the fact that people who die as children and of young illnesses and the like are included in average life expectancy but not in the average NFLers life expectancy.
