Forums - PC - Motherboard + Graphics card pairings

Alright PC Discussion, I need an AMD motherboard with a Radeon graphics card that will work well with it. Preferably something powerful so I can finally run StarCraft II. And a motherboard that has a high RAM capacity and a power supply to run all of it. Everything else is taken care of!

Assistance?

how much are you welling to spend?

Motherboard choice has zero impact on video card performance and vice versa.

Starcraft II is not a very demanding game. As long as you're not playing at 2560x1600 4xAA then a Radeon 5770 or GTS 450 will be sufficient. What other games would you play and at what settings/resolutions?

Motherboards don't have any difference between brands of graphics cards but they differ if you can install a sli or crossfire configuration.

But i recommend getting an Amd chipset motherboard, you can find cheap ones that have great performance.

Also i agree with Soleron, you can buy medium range graphics cards and get excellent performance in starcraft. With other pc games you will also have great performance since most pc games are ports from consoles.

Get a 550 W to 650 W power supply and you will be fine. Unless you will be overclocking or have in mind for a future crossfire configuration. I have a thermaltake 750w power supply with 2 8800gts, an overclocked phenom 955 and works perferctly, i have if for 3 years now. I recommend thermaltake power supplies, there are also other good brands but i haven't tested any.

@ Cougarman

Not more than 400 USD.

@ Soleron

I just needed to make sure if I picked up a Radeon card that it would be compatible with the motherboard. As for resolution 1440x900, settings on high. Other games I'd be playing:

Fallout 3

New Vegas

Orange Box (But I know for a fact that it will run on pretty much anything)

That's about it.

@ westplay

Did you have any specific motherboards in mind?

I don't have anyone specific in mind, but you can tell me from which website you will be buying so i can check out the motherboards and tell you which ones i like :P

Yeap, you get a great motherboard at the 119 price and i agree with Cougarman, also about the graphics card. You can get cheaper motherboards but with older chipsets like the 790gx and without usb 3.0 ports.

Good luck with your pc!

Good and cheap motherboard for $100. Your common gaming rig doesn't need any motherboard gimmicks really, so no need to pay for much more than this.

Radeon HD 57770 should give you all that you need at that resolution. $135 after rebate and it comes with a free pen drive!

An Antec 500W for $90. Don't believe on those trying to shove you a 1200W PSU when you don't need it. Just be sure you get it from a good brand. The 5770 is indeed power hungry for it's low price and perf, but 500W will be enough for this card unless you are overclocking frequency and voltage of both CPU and GPU massively.
