Forums - PC - Fallout online progressing - 90 people working on it

Actually sounds interesting, but I don't really like MMOs so...

The new Edge came sliding through my letterbox today. I was about to cut it up and reassemble it into a huge paper effigy of myself, like I always do, but then something caught my eye. An interview with Interplay’s president, Eric Caen? Ooh. What does he have to say?

Some quite heartening things about Fallout Online, as it turns out.

In short, there are 90 people at Interplay currently developing Fallout Online, and both the game and its beta are both scheduled for 2012. Caen says that “Even in January 2009, you were already able to move across the world,” so it sounds like the game’s a ways into development. He also says that the team are planning on amassing one MILLION subscribers, which strikes me as a pretty meaningless number.

On the subject of what Interplay are actually doing with Fallout Online, Caen is naturally pretty cagey, but the few things he does say have been published on the Edge site. To whit:

I think [Bethesda] miss a lot of the humour. Our Fallout MMOG will be extremely funny. At the same time, an MMOG must be a lot deeper than a standalone game… you can shoot, but it’s a very small portion of the game. The game itself is about reconstructing the world.

He also says Fallout Online will be unique in its approach to communication systems, and goes on to joke about Trolls receiving SMS messages from one another in World of Warcraft. So, by the sounds of things there’ll be some kind of player courier network, or fighting over radio stations. Reconstructing the world, and communication systems providing a unique challenge? Colour me very curious indeed.

If the idea of waiting more than a year doesn’t faze you, you can sign up for a place in Fallout Online’s beta on the official site.

Hmm, nice to see what's going on with Fallout Online. I've wanted a Fallout MMO ever since I played F3.

Nice to see a Fallout MMO is going well, it would be fun like that!

I hope this also means this will be the only MMO the company will make

This in turn means the Elder Scrolls MMO rumor's are hopefully all false!!!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Some of the stuff that FO is doing sound similar to some of the posts when Interplay first opened the forums. Though I suspect it was more a mutual concept and again we have only heard vague directions.

I've been signed up to the beta for about a month now. Still waiting for when it happens :)

The reason Interplay only needs 90 people, because the client and server are already made. Interplay licensed the server, engine and are paying that developer group to redo their engine for Fallout. Which means that the 90 people are content producers and people to assist in converting one MMO to another.

If you don't like MMO why post this news?

@darth
Fallout Online Fallout1/2 are done by Interplay and the Elder Scrolls Fallout 3 are done by completely 2 different companies. Fallout Online has ZERO to do with Bethesda. So if Bethesda is making claims for an MMO then that has nothing to do with Fallout Online and is still likely an Elder Scrolls MMO.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

I still found it interesting and no one else had posted it, I thought people would be interested. And I mean with all the controversy over the brand, Bethesda trying to block it etc it's an interesting case...

completely different developer and engine so New Vagas isn't really a good reference point.
