Dogs are more useful, more affectionate, more playful, more energetic and better with strangers (as long as it's not a terrier). They are also better at learning tricks. Dogs have been known to rescue their owners and even farm stock, and depending on the dog it may defend you if you were attacked (no cat would).

Cats have the demeanor of intelligence, and they are smarter than dogs, but not in any way that's useful unless you've got a rodent problem. They're good if you want a low maintenance pet who you can imagine has all sorts of personality they don't really have.

My cats say no, more affectionate than any dog I've ever met! More playful as well ...

Dogs are great if you want an obedient slave that in many cases offers the illusion of protection (certain breeds like Staffs do but in my experience, most dogs will be subservient to most humans). If I want protecting I'll use my katana thank you :P

Cats are just generally more interesting and can actually be trained if you want to (I managed to get my cat to sit on command). They're just more likely to rebel, lol.
