Rosetta stone is never a good idea. While it has many good reviews, is has many things that you will never find useful. There are other alternatives.

there are other software that will help you with a more reasonable price. and you can get many resources online to practice and to know the Spanish or Latin American culture.

While using movies, music and books are a goos resource, nothing beats a conversation. Find someone to talk to in Spanish.

Best advice is to get a class. Good software (Rosetta Stone) is expensive as hell, and you have to really have the right mentality to go it alone, like buy yourself a textbook or something (i don't have that mentality, for instance, i need structure)

Find a cheap class

well spanish is my first language and I borrowed rosetta stone spanish from a friend (I´m learning german) to check it just out of curiosity and I gotta say that their spanish is too generic, well basically just sounds pretty bad to me.

If you really want to learn the language you need to first try to learn some of the basics (like grammar and stuff to know how sentences are made) and listen to the real thing (movies, music  and IF possible try to speak with native speakers)

Learning a second language is not an easy task at all, it really requires dedication, and you really need motivated to learn it because you want to, not because of anything else.

For example I was able to learn English, I might not write it very well, but I can speak very fluently . When first I started I didn´t even know the meaning of the word soccer. What I mean is if I could do it anyone can if they dedicate enough time to it.

And don´t think I spent any time reading books, I barely touched any book. Like I said, I learned by listening, you just gotta find the best way in which you learn and exploit it.

Best of luck, and I really hope you can do it

Edit: Also, it is NEVER too late to learn something.

I only had the chance to try Rosetta stone for Japanese and it was kind of bleh.

I'd say got for a regular textbook, good if it has some audio and some exercises with answers. I also prefer regular schoolbooks for kids, the ones for adults are so boring (plus crash-courses can be very superficial and university  material too demanding).

And yeah, do watch stuff in Spanish. You'll start to pick up stuff. Back in the 90s when anime in English was rare, I watched it in Italian for about 2-3 years. I had no background in any Romance language, never picked up a grammar or a dictionary, never studied it, but by the end of the first year I understood most of what was being said and even now after a huge hiatus from using the language I'm absolutely fine with listening, decent at reading and somewhat fine with speaking (and I suppose I could easily fix the latter by spending a couple of months in Italy).

Dude I advice you to watch *Amores Perros* is a mexican movie if you like their accent. It is an excellent movie. And if you like spain´s accent go for a movie called  *Los Abrazos Rotos* (Broken Embraces) by Pedro Almodovar, Really good movie too

Spanish can get overly complicated with the grammar.

Anyhow, the best way to learn a language is to practice it constantly. Only sitting around with a textbook learning words won't cut it. Although that will help you learn the basic grammar and vocabulary, if you really want to learn it you have to find someone who can speak it and practice the hell outta it.

I dunno much about Rosetta stone (I want to get it to learn Dutch... I suck at being a Dutchman >.<) but I tried a demo and it worked a bit because you can listen and speak into a mic.

After you learn Spanish, it's going to be way easier learning a third language. So if you want to impress people you can do that.

I can speak Spanish and English, so German is going fairly easy in school for me. I can speak as well as a 3 year old.

I liked Pans'Labyrinth.

it has subtitles too, so that helps.
