Forums - Gaming - Someone gave a presentation on Video Games in class

Some kid in my college class gave a presentation on the History of Console Video Games today in my Business Communications class.

The major issue was that 90% of all the information he gave was completely wrong.

I'll give you a quote on the N64 slide he did.

"The N64 failed to out sell the PS1  because people were afraid of losing the cartridges"

It took all I had not to yell out BS.

He never talked about the original "console " games like Tennis for Two or anything of that sort.

About all his facts about the Wii, PS3, and 360 were wrong too.

"The Wii has an SD slot which makes people worry about losing their saved data just like Memory Cards in the last generation."

"You need SD cards to store all your media you download off the Virtual Console"

"The only models of the Xbox 360 that have HDMI are the elite model and the Halo 3 model"

"HDMI improves framerate"

"Blu-ray is the reason why the PS3 has improved graphics"

"You can walk into any store and buy any of the 4 models of the PS3."

Dear god it was the hardest thing to suffer through when knowing the truth.

Has anything like this happened to you guys.

I can honestly say I've never heard anyone give a presentation on video games in a Business Communications class.

As for hearing people talk about things they don't understand or actually know about... yeah that happens all the time.

I think you should have called him on his fact checking. Business communication is valueless if your facts aren't right. You'd be better off not talking at all.

Of course, anyone listening to the talk would have known some of his 'facts' were either opinions out outright bunk. Why would people be afraid to lose cartridges but not CDs? Cartridges are bigger, much more durable, etc. If you were worried about media, you'd want cartridges.

I've never heard a person pull information out of his (misdirected) ass like that in a presentation, but plenty of folks have the same amount of knowledge of the industry, and ALL of them have accounts on Gamespot...

Hilarious though, great man! He should be Michael Pachters assistant or something so his skills come in handy.

Lol, you're slightly evil sometimes! Still funny though...

I felt the same when a girl was doing a presentation about chat rooms on the internet. She had just done her Bachelor's Degree on the subject, so she had a pile of research from "actual chat rooms" (*cries of amazement from audience*), and pretty much presented us with a short version of it.

The problem is she clearly never uses the internet in her spare time, and over half of it sounded really dodgy. She included lists of smilies and acronyms, over half of which I had never seen (I have IRC open 24/7, and let's just say this isn't the only forum I've got around 2k posts on). Sadly I don't remember much of it anymore, but I'm sure you'll all believe me.

I'm looking forward to the first generations to grow up with online games and the like to get old enough to do serious research. Most of the current stuff is still pretty painful. =/

In university I took a Sociology course in the same semester I took the Statistics course which was required for my math degree. In statistics we were in a section about the sample size you needed, and I was doing a paper in sociology ...

The funny thing was that every study I was reading for sociology had a sample size of 10 to 20 people, while my statistics course implied every statistic they gathered required 500+ people to prove the point they were trying to make.
