I got it on PSN months ago and haven't finished it yet... I have problems liking some of the characters (rat lady and fat chef thingy)

Heh, Freya and Quina?

They suck. Almost every character sucks in FF9, except for Zidane and Vivi. Vivi alone is the best character in the entire series though and more than makes up for it.

you're dissing steiner and beatrix >_>? Or you just failed to list, the others In you're favorite game?
That whole Eiko writing a letter and chaos insues was awesome!
WTF DTEWI

tbh, i think had the game been photorealistic it wouldve been a lot better, i think a lot of people switched off for FF9 because either they didnt like FF8, or PS1 was fading, and a lot of people were not used to the style of FF9 after FF7, FF8. i actully think the characters are all very good, even Eiko.

the thing i loved actully about Freya was she was deep, well fleshed out and the writing on the whole was very good because they didnt say stuff like 'hold on baby, your heros on the way', and Qunia was very funny, he/she, just made the game so much more worthwhile. because in FF8, we just had sterotypes of teenagers, and in FF9 everything changed because the characters were more diverse and they very well wrtten, even though they werent realistically drawn, their stories were maturely fleshed out i think.

I completely disagree with almost everything you said except eiko. Photorealistic would have hurt this game imo. Because this game was not, realistic. And the visuals were charming. Making it's visuals more realistic would have taken away it's charm imo.

i think everyone whoes finished FF7 has fond memories of it, and i think thier were a lot of mature themes in their, like lifestream, or death, cloning, terrorism, etc so many levels of awesomeness. but in response to what a lot some people have said i think the FF7 compliation has been good, but imo the quality of the compliation has seriously tarnished the name FF7, and imo SE need to stop with these sequels, prequels and huge compliations, that end up being made of several poor/ mediocure titles instead of just one very good title.

I play through it every year or two, it's a game that has to be revisited.

i like how the thread was derailed into a ff9 discussion.... :D

I just finished FF IX again.  I would like to replay FF VII eventually (I completed the game countless times already, but that was ages ago).  Sadly, I just can't get myself to play past some early parts in Midgar.  The gameplay, controls and most importantly the graphics are keeping me from enjoying it again.  I have fond memories of the game, but I must agree that among all the titles in the series, this game is the only one that NEEDS to be remade.   Not because it's the best in the series (for me, VI and IX are the best), but because it is the one that aged the worst (along with the original NES titles).  Even the SNES, probably due to the fact they are sprite based, are easier to go back to in their original state.

Getting back to FF IX.  I just finished the game a few hours ago, and seriously, I didn't remember the game being so good.  The direction, the classic feel of its gameplay, the characters, the universe, the story that is filled with nods to past entries, the graphics that are very impressive AND expressive for the time (and which look particularly good on the small screen of a PSP) and of course the awesome soundtrack which is certainly one of the best that Nobuo has composed in his career.

The game even gave me "blurry vision" during its ending.  That's a sign that the game did something extremely right.

I think it's sad that Square-Enix hasn't been able to produce games like that since the PS era.  FF X tried, but I just couldn't relate to any of its characters, and FF XII, while having great gameplay, lacked a lot of content, story and character-wise.  And FF XIII felt just... rushed.

One of my favorite games of all time...... I can't play it now though, my memories are good enough. Give me FF7 HD remake and Socom 2 HD remake and I'm good..
