Forums - Website Topics - VGChartz Update and New Jobs

@ioi: Great to hear the news. I generally enjoy the latest version of VGC. As has been mentioned, having better integration between the various sites is one area I'd like to see improved upon. Another is that gamrReview seems a bit out of place; it seems like it belongs somewhere in-between Feed and Chartz, but feels like the odd guy out.

I really dig how easy it is to switch between forums, and I love how easy it is to rate games in our collections. It's really cool to see how games are rated overall by users, and it's an awesome touch that we have statistics concerning our site contributions and collections on our profiles.

@Montana: ioi is right about needing to broaden our horizens. I am absolutely positive that ioi and the gang are always moving toward more sample data, contacts, and improving methodology for Chartz, so no worries about that on my end. As I'm sure you know, the idea is to cover all bases with the other portions of the site(news, reviews, community). Originally I wasn't too thrilled with the move and I only came to do work on the DB, check sales, and participate in the forums some. As time went by I found myself checking our news section more and more to the point that I now get most of my news from gamerFeed(as it has improved vastly), and only skim through the sites I used to frequent for news(IGN, 1UP, etc).

As for competing in that area with the big guys, that's not something we should shy away from. Obviously we are seeing success with our news section(some of our articles really get a lot of hits) so we are on the right track. Besides, there are always ways to differentiate ourselves from others. A good example is our old(and current?) partner at Kombo.com. I still go to their site because they have interesting articles that you just dont see anywhere else. Hmm, I just checked and apparently Kombo doesnt carry the VGC banner/numbers any more. Oh well, last I checked our banner on their site some months ago they still were spelling it VGChartS:P

Can we get an option to customize 'our' front page? Meaning once logged in we can rearrange the front page how we feel like with what we frequent most being closer to the top, etc.

Same feature could be used for our user page.

Wow a lot of awesome upgrades are on their way.  I just have a few questions.

Will the Vgchartz pro be a monthly or yearly type fee?

Have you decided on a price for Vgchartz pro yet?

And what is GamrTV like?

This is all great news for the site, I'm really happy for you ioi.
Just one minor question, but that's more of a thing that's going on for the past years =P, is the site speed ever going to increase (significantly)? I fear major businesses and the likes want high speed sites with easy access. Is there a plan to improve this?

awesome!

I liked the idea of VGC at first, but judging how things are shaping up now, I am becoming a fanboy.

Seriously, sky is the limit. IGN / Gamespot / Eurogamer let me down quite some times in the last couple of years. I am looking forward to see VGC evolve.

BTW... where can I apply?

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Nice to hear it... looking forward to  the improvements..  as for GamrTV.. don't invest in your own tech at first but use a business account on sites like viddler.. its a good way to see first how popular GamrTV will be and then you can calculate if it's profitable to get your own tech or just stay with viddler..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

don't you need someone to run BugriChartz? I'm obviously the man for the job....

For Pro we are going to offer monthly and yearly options. The price is going to be fairly high, I'm not going to lie about that - it is really aimed at businesses who need full data access and I can't see many casual users forking out for it. We will still release various amounts of info, in sales articles and of course the running totals will be public for everyone to see. It is more about making it easier to compare and add up various types of data. For example, if I wanted to track Ubisoft $$ sales in the Americas from 2007 - 2010 on PS3 it would be pretty much impossible with what you have now and a standard account but for a Pro member there will be an easy tool to extract this kind of info. So we're not selling data, we are selling easier access and tools - tailored for industry needs. An investor doesn't care how one game compares to another or particularly about unit sales, he is more interested in $$ sales and at a company level, so Pro will have a different focus.

GamrTV is a video site - we want 3 sections: Originals (show coverage, reviews, previews, interviews), Trailers and User-submitted. We are currently working on some video hosting tech and trying to find the best option for us (hosting videos is a very costly area).

As for others asking about customisable homepages and bringing certain features back - yes, this is all going to be happening (but will take time and be bit by bit).

"... the return of a number of charting and comparison tools,..."

so can you provide any insight into which charting and comparision tools are going to be in the free version of the site?

...or put much more pointedly, will the ability to chart weekly and accumulated sales for each of the consoles by year or by aligned launches return for the freebie users?  i really miss that feature.

Well this is a tough one. To be honest, I've yet to really figure out what causes the site to be "slow". The speed definitely improved with this latest version (as we moved away from heavy use of flash) and CPU useage (for the user) is down to more normal levels now - i.e the site isn't that heavy now. In terms of server CPU and bandwidth I'm not sure there is much more we can do - I know we have a few queries that aren't really optimised and these can really slow the site at times (especially when uploading new data or adding up totals etc). The main issue though is probably with ads and unfortunately all I can do there is keep getting on to our ad providers and get them to upgrade their servers.

So it is a complex issue really but something that I definitely want to improve. Do you feel the site is significantly slower than other similar sites then?

If you mean with similar IGN/Gamespot, then no you're right, it isn't significantly slower. I just have the feeling the site speed isn't optimised somehow. I know it can't be as fast as a regular forum or blog site, but because the site is split up, and less data is on one specific part of the website, the speed should go up right? Ad's aren't a problem (for me that is), but getting from let's say VGchartz to gamerConnect is taking 4-5 seconds for me.

When looking at Alexa.com (you're probably familiar with it), it says this : Very Slow (3.986 Seconds), 90% of sites are faster.  Don't know if that number is up to date though?

But I guess, comparing game sites with regular isn't really fair, so I don't know how fast it can and should be.

It's pretty cool being here since 2007 when the site looked like a 12 year old's MySpace page and seeing it evolve over the years into what it is today. VGChartz will always hold a special place in my heart :'(
