Forums - Nintendo - Netflix on Wii goes disc-free

Netflix this morning gave the Wii its long-promised disc-free option. The last of the three major consoles to have the move confirmed, Nintendo's system can install a Netflix app from Wii Shop and both manage and watch the instant queue in standard definition. It still remains one of the more advanced TV interfaces with the Wii remote serving as a mouse pointer.

Access works for both Americans and Canadians, with pricing depending on the service. In the US, Netflix costs a minimum of $9 but includes one physical movie rental at a time. Canadians can pay a lower $8 CAD but only have access to streaming videos.

PS3 owners should also be getting disc-free viewing today, but plans were already detailed last week.

Wow thats great news. I love netflix on the Wii, but it is kind of a pain to switch the disc all the time. Can't wait to download the channel.

When does this become available?

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Sound cool. Now, does anyone know

1. If they're checking the IP or whether it is enough that the WIi is a US one? I'm not physically located in the US, but have a US Wii...

2. Is the assortment the same as "normal" (DVD based) netflix or is the Netflix console viewable assortment very limited? (Can anyone confirm whether they have available through the consoles 24:Redemption ? Fringe?)

Currently Playing: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Today!

Only 49 blocks too... most surprising imo is that over 3m US Wii's have already connected to Netflix. That's a pretty substantial userbase already.

I can't download it. I don't have access to the Wii Shop Channel.

I use Netflix all the time on the Wii too.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

I'm fairly sure you need a US or Canadian based IP address to access Netflix.
