Anyway, away from the pointless little mini argument thing.

I think these are the previous shipment numbers just being quoted as being sold. As Sony do. All the time.

Can't wait for the new shipment numbers though!!

it isnt pointless, its at the very heart of the site and its numbers.

We really need to discover why there is a larger gap between Sony shipped v sold thru retail than Ninty or MS.... if for no other reason to stop the constant crap that comes from it.

The answer is probably developing markets as vgchartz has already undertracked PS2 (and PSP) for years I wouldn't be surprised that the same happens to PS3. For example last quarter Sony shipped more PS2s than MS did X360s and yet we have X360 outselling PS2 weekly by big margin. I understand though that it's hard to track developing markets. In some cases probably pretty impossible.

Might as well just wait for their Q2 report to come out.  Seems a bit odd that one of the few times they report sell through rather than shipments has the number almost equal to their last shipment number.

That is just coincidence, nothing more and nothing less.

Look people, there is an European manager being interviewed about PS3/Move. He is a manager somewhere in the upper food chain and has _no clue at all_ how many of what Sony is selling at the moment. Just in case the question comes up, he'd called his underlings about how many of what they have sold (sold = sold into the distribution channel). He gets the only safe numbers they have - Quarter 1 results for the PS3 (38mio), and 1.5mio "Move units" sold (= number of Move units manufactured and shipped/sold int othe distribution channel for Europe. Probably even identical to Quarter 2 results for Move units allocated to Europe).

Absolutely no problem with vgchartz numbers or interpretation of what he said in that interview.

it's just a a statement saying that most likely those 38m ps3's that sony reported earlier on in the year are most likely sold by now, we shall be able to tell more on the next shipment, not to mention ps3 was already adjusted up several times, hopefully i don't get banned for stating the obvious but that is a end of thread statement right there

it's the future of handheld

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Chief Andrew House said the PS3's PlayStation Move motion control device has sold "in the region of 1.5 million units" in the continent in its first month of sales.

Speaking to Bloomberg News, House noted that sales since the peripheral's September 19th release have exceeded initial expectations, and that the company is "probably be looking at accelerating production" for the camera-based motion controller.

House also said he expects the PlayStation 3 to exceed sales targets of 15 million units worldwide for the fiscal year, thanks to strength in North America and Europe. “Sales have been significantly up year-on-year in a market that has been overall slightly down,” he said.

The strong system sales, which have contributed to total sell-though of 38 million PS3s worldwide since launch (as of an October 13 company report), led House to maintain his prediction that the PlayStation unit would be profitable for the fiscal year ending in March 2011, despite challenges associated with currency fluctuations.

The PlayStation 3 has seen renewed consistency of sales in numerous markets since a price reduction and hardware redesign last August.

Despite the recent delay of long-anticipated PS3-exclusive racing title Gran Turismo 5, House said he was "very confident that the game will be released before the end of this year."

I'd like to see the report which this interprets, but on the face of it yes...  VGC pretty much spot on.

it's a mis quote the 38 million figure was from the last quarterly report...

which had 38.1M ps3's sold as of JUNE 2010...

the PS2 has sold 146 million units WORLD WIDE according to sony's quarterly figures... and by late october, that number should be 1-1.5 million units higher once they announce their quarterly figures again...

PSP has sold over 65 million

and PS3 had 38.1 million as of june, it's true that markets that only PS products sell are were they are being undertracked, it's more than likely the actual install base is closer to 40 million for ps3 than 39 million right now. I wont be suprised if the quarterly results are near 41 million LTD figures for ps3... and possibly even matching the 360 in quarterly sales even with the slim.
