I don't like Japanese pop culture at all. For me it's like watching French movies, it has such an awkward mindset which doesn't pull any strings with me. It's not realistic, it doesn't portray people's emotions of real life, it doesn't have a relevant message and it's usually not a grappling fantasy world either. Japanese cartoons, their music, their humor, the movies. They all plain suck - to me.

The only exception is games, to some extent. Some Japanese games are good but not very many. Castle vania, Zelda and the Arcade coin-ops of the '80s.

Japanese old culture and history is a completely different thing though. I like that a lot and it shouldn't be mixed with modern Japanase culture (not that anyone does, I'm just saying).

Beside the language, many french movies are comparable to american one. Plus, many french movies have been re-done by american producer with american actors, all that with the exact same mindset and story. Also, french realisator like Luc Besson have made action movies comparable to any big holywood titles. All around, I really dont get your point. I think your judging with too little information.

Well of course you don't get my point because you obviously like French movies.

I like good movies whatever the language. :P

My freshman year in college, I was big into Neon Genesis Evangelion. Almost to point of considering to buy a mech robot from the series to build and place on my desk.

I have to disagree it is nerdism. People have their hobbies. You would be just as crazy to go into a college anime club and trash talk just as you would go into a sports bar in Pittsburgh, PA and loudly taunt, root against and laugh at the Pittsburgh Steelers during one of their games...Well, I would take my chances with the anime club rather than a bunch of middle-aged, ex jocks buzzed off of alcohol.

I see the term "maturity" being thrown around a lot as a reason why non-Japanese prefer anime over other cartoons. Can someone please define how anime is more mature than say...South Park? Does having more emo-like emotions make it more mature? Does having male guys in anime cry make it more mature? Is it the dialogue? Subject matter parodying real life controversies inside the anime?

What makes anime "mature" if well over half of it is fantasy? The exclusion of muscular protagonists making the scrawny male viewer more at ease with their lack of wanting to build their own physique? Middle aged women characters having the voice pitch of a 5 year old?

Maturity is meaningless unless you define it and compare it to something else like South Park, Family Guy, or American Dad.

South Park from my perspective is the best there is in parodying Western culture as a "mature" cartoon. From the latest season with Cartman dreaming to be a NASCAR driver, to Cartman parodying Glenn Beck with Wendy wanting to kill the smurfs, to Butters becoming a pimp, and on.

I would suggest watching some South Park along with your anime. Classic show that is right with making fun of the times.

It's not that there aren't mature cartoons, it's that there aren't mature cartoons outside of the genre of comedy.  I love South Park but it certainly isn't where I go if I want a nice romance story in a cartoon or a bloody action oriented cartoon, or a slice of life comedy.  All of the mature cartoons in the west are for the sake of comedy and none take themselves seriously.   That doesn't mean they're bad and I love ATHF, Venture Bros., Boondocks, and South Park, but it does mean that you can get a much greater variety in anime than you do in Western cartoons.

btw, most of the stuff you said about anime makes me wonder if you've ever seen any outside of Evangelion.

nevermind. Post lost due to some random error.

man, personally I think we should kick back a lot of these Japanese anime watching people. Kick them back to the late 80's and early 90's. Back where the entire notion of shitty dubs was the norm. There would be less complaint about the new stuff these days :P

anyways. it's been a growing niche since the late 70's and early 80's. I should know I was part of that enthusiast crowd for a while. It's just gone more insane now than before. It's the same mentality why so many gamers are just plain nuts.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

@ people talking about Dubs.

It also annoys me when someone says they prefer the japanese dub because "many times the english dub sucks and is emotionless"

Ok, bad english dub is a good reason. But if they don't know shit about japanese how do they know that it is a good dub?  WHY they care in the first place if it is better dubbed in japanese IF THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND SHIT! For Christ sake.

Even worst: english dub are bad, but it is ok watching cartoons on a language you don't understand and where many male characters have annoying female voice, and where many female characters have 5 year old kid voice.

That's riciculous.

"Life is but a gentle death. Fate is but a sickness that results in extinction and in the midst of all the uncertainty, lies resolve."

Seriously, you don't need to understand a language to judge expressiveness on the whole. Yes, expressiveness in a specific situation, to judge whether it actually fits, but that's what you have the subs for if you don't understand the language.

Anyway, unless you are stuck watching anime with someone who likes the opposite option, just move on. I agree that the fanboys' moaning subs>dubs is annoying, but the opposite is equally so. Anime DVDs come with both tracks by default so where's the problem?

Fail troll is fail.

Japan does the same thing with America. Two of the greatest consumer cultures admire the cultural products of the other. Case closed.
