Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii still rare in US? How is this possible.

My personal belief is that the Wii is America's newest, cheap toy that everybody must have. I also believe that the software will catch up with the Wii's success and the sales will stall. Right now, the Wii has very little in the way of "innovative" gaming to make the concept a truly successful one. Once consumers understand this, they'll move on to another toy. That's not to say that the Wii will forever remain a toy, just that right now it's nothing special.

Or maybe its what people want, if people wanted the gaming on the PS3 and 360 they would have been gamers in the previous gens

instead they are buying a Wii because its gaming is accessible and it has options for people who aren't interested in playing for 30 hours, but only want to play for a few minutes to maybe an hour or who want to play with their friends, in addition it has the Nintendo games for the hardcore

and it is getting good dev support as it becomes the fastest selling console and quickly catches up to the 360

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Really, how can anyone saying "The PS3 can never hope to be a great console with fun games" may be regarded as a fact?

Hey now, some of us are actually trying to make points and statements without throwing around distasteful remarks here.

Fanboy remarks will be called idiotic because there's no other adjective that describes them in a better way.

Still waiting on the proof that senior citizens are lining up for the Wii, btw.

there was a news story on my local news channel as well as THIS VERY SITE about retirement homes seeing great success with Wii Sports. My local news channel in particular said the home was holding a bowling tournament. I saw atleast 5 different old people praising the Wii in that news story.

a toy? is that why all the old people jumped on board?

It's a great console with fun games. Something PS3 could never hope for.

Are you trying to get people mad at you? All consoles can be fun. There are already fun games on the PS3. Give it a rest, please. I'm getting a Wii, but I wouldn't go without a PS3 or 360 this generation. You'd miss out on too much, uh, FUN.

He also gave his opinion. That's what we do here. You don't need to write "I think" or "My opinion is" before your sentences.
When we want to give facts, usually we use numbers, links or quotes proving them.

Well, he stated his opinion as if it were fact. It simply takes tact to convey an opinion and not mere verbage. Don't defend fanboys.

I didn't see anyone defending you.

Otherwise they wouldn't be game consoles. Thats the essence of videogames.

Stop the bantering.  All you're doing is ruining any decent discussion some of us were having, if you're not going to contribute to the thread, don't post.

TRYING to get on track here.....

Let's make some statements we can be sure of from the news we constantly read without having to do too much digging, these statements are usually in comparison to the PS3 and 360, btw.

The Wii is selling better to -

- senior citizens.

- pre-teenage kids.

- those who have never been interested in gaming before. (thank you wii remote)

- those who have been outside of gaming for one or more console generations.

- those on a budget.

- those who want pick-up and play games.

- who wants family friendly games. (it's quickly approaching the 360's number of titles that do so, with the console itself bearing a greater "family friendly" image in the public's mind)

 And of course

- fans of Nintendo consoles and games.

If we can get this discussion back on track, I'd gladly also contribute further to it's discussion.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

It's been more then 5 months. No console ships over 6 million to retailers and keeps selling out like it's launch day. This has to be something that only happens in middle America.

They're like gold dust in the UK too. Always sell out in minutes when they become available online (except for the enforced bundles which can sometimes be available for a couple of days - you're talking £330 for those though which is circa $660).

I don't think anyone (including Nintendo) really knows how big the demand for the Wii actually is. It's got the potential to reach phenomenon status I reckon.

I'd like to add a couple of other reasons:

+ DS Lite 'Halo' Effect

+ eBay Auctions (and I so hate the people making a quick buck off of them)

Faced with phenomenal demand, Nintendo will up their supply, but I don't see them supplying 20 million this year even with phenomenal supply.

Nintendo is a very conservative company. Increasing production is an expensive endeavor, and takes a long time to break even. If Nintendo decide to double production, then they might satisfy pent-up demand in a couple of months, and then suddenly they are producing millions of consoles expensively, and then they have to store them expensively because they're not selling as quick, they have to disable a production facility because they're producing too much, etc.

You'll most likely see Nintendo judging demand carefully, increasing production slowly, and making sure they time things well so that when pent-up demand is satisfied a new big game comes out and they are constantly selling the consoles they make.

I doubt there will be enough of an increase in production from Nintendo to have 20 million consoles sold at the end of this year, whether the demand is there or not)

While I also question if Nintendo will be able to get 20M out the door by the end of the year, Nintendo isn't taking the financial risk you think it is.  The Wii is currently made by Foxconn and Nintendo is looking for another company to help:

I'm sure Nintendo will work with Foxconn and this new partner to be flexible with their production amounts if necessary.  But at this point I don't think that Nintendo could make too many systems this year.  (Any extras made over the summer can be stockpiled and sold over the holidays.)
